About the New Virtualmin.com

Virtualmin.com has just undergone a major transformation, migrating from OpenACS to Joomla. All of the data, such as forums posts, bug reports, and customer issue reports, have all been migrated to the new system. User accounts have also been migrated, and of course your purchased software is still available for download. This page will tell you about a few of the changes, and how to smoothly make the transition.

New Username and Password

The new CMS uses a different format for usernames and a different encryption hash type for the passwords, so both had to be replaced. When possible we've generated a username similar to the one you used on the old website. Passwords have been replaced with a randomly generated one.

If your email address was up to date, and the message didn't get filtered by spam filters, you should already have an email with your new username and password. If you didn't get such an email, you can contact Joe directly, or you can use the Forgot Password link in the upper right corner of the screen to use an automated password recovery process.

You can, of course, reset both the username and password to anything you like. You can do so on the Your Account page.

Software Downloads

Your purchased products are available on the new site, at the same URL as the old site: http://www.virtualmin.com/serial

If you have any trouble downloading your software from the new license manager, please let me know.

If you're looking for Virtualmin GPL, you can download it for free from Webmin.com. Feel free to ask questions about our Open Source products in the forums and report bugs in the bug tracker. Premium support is not available for Virtualmin GPL, but it is actively maintained and we're happy to answer questions in the forums.

Bugs and Issues

The bug tracker and issue tracker from the old site have been merged into a single bugs and issues tracker, and all issues from the old trackers have been migrated over. They have new ID numbers, and the URLs have changed, so old links from email notifications are no longer valid. But, the bug tracker is searchable, using many criteria, and it offers significant improvements in the ability to sort and categorize issues.

One great improvement over the old tracker is the ability to mark an issue private. This allows you to include sensitive information, like usernames and passwords, without exposing that data to other users. The "customer issues" from the old website have all been imported with the "private" flag set--so they are all now private.

Notifications

The notifications system and the granularity of said systems is quite different between the new website and the old, so notifications have not been migrated. You will need to reset any notifications you'd like to receive for the forums and bug tracker. Note that RSS feeds actually work correctly with the new system. Many users expressed a preference for RSS feeds over email notifications, so this is a marked improvement over the old site.

Documentation

Our documentation has all been imported into a wiki, and we've extended most of the existing documentation and added several new pages of documentation. We encourage you to comment on and expand upon the documentation at your leisure. Jamie and I plan to spend a lot of time on the documentation over the next few weeks as we wrap up the Early Adopter period. Read and contribute in the new documentation section.

Thanks!

Finally, we'd like to thank the folks who've provided feedback on the problems with the old site and our old processes. Specifically, Alan Dobkin, Stephan Hodges, Austin Hui, Scott Grayban, Dan Long, Robin Dunn, and the half dozen or so others that I can't remember by name because it's 2 AM and I've been working on the new site for approximately eight thousand years. The new site is in very active development, and everything you've ever wished for will come to the new site, if it isn't already here.
