[SOLVED] New webmin users fail to login 2007/11/17 12:00
I am using webmin with virtualmin and usermin for a while now on Debian 4.0. All is well except I want to give my users access to AWStats.
The problem is that none of the webmin users I create with virtualmin or directly using webmin users module is able to login. They can login to usermin to check email. I can use the "switch user" to get into their account. I tried changing passwords. I checked if every option in Virtualmin related to the webmin account creation is active.
I have been searching and trying stuff for hours but unfortunately all users I create fail to login to webmin.
Where should I look for the cause ? What can I do ?

Howdy trendzetter,

Not sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish, but I can maybe clear up some terms and how things are supposed to work:

Being able to login to Usermin means only that you've created a system user. System users are not Webmin users at all, by default, and are not expected to be able to login to Webmin. You're probably creating a Mail and FTP user, which has no Webmin access (and should not have Webmin access).

The Switch User feature in Virtualmin switches you to the virtual server owners account--which you didn't create explicitly. This user is created during creation of a virtual server, and is the default user for all administrative tasks for the virtual server you've created. This is the user account that is normally used for looking at AWStats reports (and everything else administrative someone would need to do with a virtual server). So maybe you're trying to do something that is already done for you, by default?

So, maybe you can explain a bit more about what you're trying to do here? If you're just wanting the virtual server owner to be able to see AWstats, then all you need to do is give them their administrative username and password (the one that is automatically created when you create a new virtual server). You don't need to create a new account for that at all.

Hello Joe,
What I am trying is giving AWStats reports to the owners of the virtual server. I can see that the owners are created as webmin users ( Webmin > webmin users ) when "Server Owner Limits > Webmin login" and "Edit virtual server > Webmin login" are enabled. Unfortunately, the users cannot login on webmin. I noticed none of the newly created webmin users is able to log in. Even when I create a new user via Webmin > Webmin users. I tried logging on using SSH with the same users and passwords and thats ok so the password and unix user is created succesfully. Where is the log of the loginattempts ? Can I do something to raise the logging to get a clue ?
thanks!

Can it be that it is related to the installation of the Webmin Users module ? It looks like I installed it afterwards.

After days searching and trying stuff I just rebooted the server. I also removed the collectinfo.lock but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
The new users can now log on to webmin as I was trying to archieve all the time.
