Cloudmin: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server 32 and 64 bits images missing (only 6.04 is there)

Nothing super-urgent, but would be nice to have an up-to-date Ubuntu release for the VPSes, and in both 32 and 64 bits modes.

We saw that 64 bits systems look significantly faster on 64 bits systems, so it's worth having both.

Sure, we could look into that. Because packaging up distros is quite a lot of work, we have chosen to go with CentOS and Debian at first, but eventually we will get to others.

Are you using Xen there, or Vservers?

We are now using XEN with Ubuntu 8.04LTS server edition 64 bits.

Most virtual servers have VIrtualminPro, and a few non-webhosting ones have VirtualminGPL, however the image with just minimal Ubuntu 8.04LTS server edition 64 bits and sshd installed for easier remote access would be fine for us. Actually, what would be really really cool would be to be able to specify additional repositories for aptitude source, and a list of packages to install on the bare Ubuntu system (so you would have no need to preinstall virtualmin on it, and maintain huge files when virtualmin has a release).

We have been using Debian etch 32 bits, but switched to Ubuntu 8.04 64 bits (which is also debian based and has the imho far superior packages handling compared to CentOS) because of more recent software versions in it, native support for almost all packages we use, and faster security upgrades available when vulnerabilities are discovered. I may be wrong in any of those statements, and would be delighted to be corrected if wrong.

We saw a big improvement in performances in switching, maybe due to the 64 bits system instead of 32 bits?

Also the XEN files settings should even be more flexible, as we define 2 eth interfaces inside.

Finally, up to now we have been using dedicated partitions on the harddisks for performance reasons, but I see that Cloudmin does support only files. Files would be more convenient for us too. Do you have any analysis on inpact on performances using files (specially with disk-intensive database accesses) ?

(please let me know if you would prefer separate tickets for these side-comments/questions)

I've just added an image for Ubuntu 8.04 with the base OS only - you should be able to see it shortly on the New System Images page. You can create your own image containing Virtualmin GPL or Pro from this if you like..

I'll also add images for Ubuntu 9, Fedora 10 and 64-bit versions of all those over the next few days.

Regarding your other questions about multiple-ethernet support and using physical disks, please file separate bugs for these. They are good suggestions!

Thank you Jamie. Seeing the "Ubuntu 8.04 Xen instance with base OS" appearing, but no mention if it's 32 or 64 bits.

I know 64 bits takes a little extra RAM but (at least seems) notably faster than 32 bits.

Ubuntu 9.10 is IMHO less to be recommended for web-hosting as it's not a long-term supported version.

Question: do the virtual disks for XEN include a partition table in them (something important for a few softwares) ?

(created separate requests for the other items here: https://www.virtualmin.com/node/10196 https://www.virtualmin.com/node/10197 https://www.virtualmin.com/node/10198 )

All the images are 32-bit x86 by default - the 64-bit images will have 64-bit in the title. I'm working on creating them now.. but it will take a few days, as creation of new images involves quite a few steps.

The Xen virtual disks used by Virtualmin don't include a partition table - each is effectively a single partition, which gets mapped to /dev/sdaX within the Xen instance. It is possible to have Xen instances where there is a partition table, boot loader and kernel within the virtual disk, but we don't support creation of those yet.

Ok, there is a 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 image now..

I plan to add Debian 5.0 soon too.
