What do I Need to Install Virtualmin?

Hi

I am new to Web/Virtualmin and although I've searched this site for hours on end I still have some really basic questions that need answering...

I'm sure this question has been answered a million times - but I just want to be clear! I'm sorry for being such a newb!

I have a totally clean box with Deb 5 on it - nothing else. As I don't know what virtualmin is like I am going to try the GPL version to see how I get on.

This is where my questions start...:

It appears that virtualmin pro takes care of the installation of everything you need to get you going... but I can't work out if the GPL version does this too?

Do I need to install Apache, Bind, MySQL, PHP etc... before I install virtualmin or after? or not at all?

Say, for example, I decide I don't want a mail server just now but in 3 months time I decide I do want a mail server. Will virtualmin gpl still recognize the mail server or do I need to have all of that stuff sorted before I go ahead with virtualmin?

Last but not least - is it best to install webmin first? or will the install.sh take care of all of that for me?

Thank you.

Yup, just grab the install.sh file for Virtualmin GPL from the Download link above, it'll install and configure things for you in the same way that the Pro version does.

You do not need those beforehand, the install.sh script will install them for you.

Say, for example, I decide I don't want a mail server just now but in 3 months time I decide I do want a mail server. Will virtualmin gpl still recognize the mail server or do I need to have all of that stuff sorted before I go ahead with virtualmin?

For this specific example, what I'd suggest is first using the install.sh script, performing the install -- then going into Virtualmin and disabling the mail feature.

You can then re-enable the mail feature any time you like.

Last but not least - is it best to install webmin first? or will the install.sh take care of all of that for me?

The install.sh actually does all the hard work for you (and probably some of the easy work too :-)

You don't need to do anything at all, except provide a fresh OS install on a supported Linux version (which includes Debian 5).

From there, run the install.sh, log into Virtualmin and answer some questions it asks immediately after the install -- and from there you should be ready to roll, outside of any tuning you may wish to do.

Thank you very much for helping me with those questions.

I used webmin a good few years ago - but i've never tried Virtualmin - and it seems like the logical tool for me.

Quite looking forward to having a play around with the API - to see what it can do.

Thanks again,
