Can there be a simple howto's ie Default server etc... plz?

Hello, i have the same problem but kinda ...well.??

my server ie. the computer host name is: richie-system. registered domain is: richie-system.com

with all the ns1, and ns2 setup.

now working on a different CP but want to move to webmin/virtualmin.

The questions:

1.

do i have to setup the main details such as ns1,ns2, mx, ftp ect records using the webmin interface before setting up a virtual server on virtualmin? if so...

then there will be naming conflit. ( i had that. please advice)

2.

Do have to just create the new virtual server with the said details only? i did that and it does not resolve. ( www.pingability.com ) can not give details. And from the web browser ..... Mr. Apache refuses my permission to access .

3. Can you please advice me which is which?. The procedure('s) on how to set up the default server under webmin/virtualmin as i am seriously in need of your help.

Thankz in advance. King.

your computer hostname is a FQDN: ns1.richie-system.com
2nd nameserver set up depends if it is on the same system or a different server
you should install virtualmin on a clean system and use the install.sh which will then do the hard work for you
then import the domains

replacing a control panel on a production server with domains would not be my choice though

Do i need to create the master zone manually inside the webmin panel OR

Just hit straight to to virtualmin after the install script is done.

eg, http:123447/:10000

virtualmin -> create virtual server the start creating right?.

Check this out. 1. virtualmin will create everything except ns1,ns2 or the ns records in short. This make resolving an issue.

Please advice.

Also when i create for instance virtualmin-->create virtual server straight on.... Then apache refuses permission to display the page from external ip and ip's on the same network but display only on the host system.

NOTE:

I just figure this out. With the apache permission, setting up my domain records in webmin works fine. But this does work, what will be the fate of the virtual servers? Apache access error log does not give much.

[Wed Jul 14 23:40:30 2010] [error] [client 27.7.116.101] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /home/noblis-system/public_html/ [Wed Jul 14 23:40:30 2010] [error] [client 27.7.116.101] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /home/noblis-system/public_html/

I am new to webmin as you can tell. Can you point me to right direction plz.

EG.

  1. That set all your first domains only with virtualmin./ webmin period.
  2. advice about where to look about the apache error on permission. This is not a file permission issue. cos i have verified -R all var / home dir's. Os is Ubuntu 10.04. i can see that the problem exists on rhel/centos and fedora platforms and they got a fix. apparently Ubuntu line seems different. thats the

etc/ apaches ->cond.d ->localized-error-pages.

Please advice.

Check this out. 1. virtualmin will create everything except ns1,ns2 or the ns records in short. This make resolving an issue.

This is incorrect. Virtualmin will create NS records for you, assuming the hostname of the server is valid and already resolves and you have configured a secondary name server. If your server hostname does not already resolve, you'll need to make it resolve, which means you need to add an A record (not NS record) for the hostname of the system, and you need to make sure your registrar knows that your name servers are the name servers for your zone. NS records should be handled by Virtualmin, but the A record for those names might need to be created manually in Webmin, if they don't already resolve.

Note that Virtualmin does not create new NS+A records for every zone. It uses the hostname of the system (by default, but it is configurable), and the secondary that you setup (docs here: http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/dns/slave-configuration ) for all virtual servers. This is because springing an NS into existence at your registrar can be extremely time consuming and error prone, and is usually a multi-step process (that involves setting it up first with a different NS until the new NS can resolve; it's stupid, but that's the way GoDaddy and most others roll).

I don't understand your other question about Apache. Can you give me a specific example of the problem you're seeing? Are you trying to get an index (i.e. a list of files in the public_html)? If so, it sounds like you need to configure Apache a bit differently. But, most folks don't want indexes turned on for regular websites, as it is a potential security issue.
