migrating to new server - what settings are restored from VM GPL backups ?

I am considering a migration to a more robust server. Currently I use Virtualmin GPL, but it was installed long ago using an older version which did not included anti-spam and anti-virus on a domain level basis(now a standard feature of GPL). For whatever reason the updates to VM GPL have not added these features correctly. The options exist in the control panel but they don't work.

Anyway, if I can backup and restore my domains using VM's backup service that would be ideal. However, I want to be sure that all the features on the newest version of VM work properly on these migrated domains. Will restoring these backups include any settings that are currently preventing the antivirus/spam features from working correctly?

I don't have a lot of domains, so I suppose I can just backup the data only and manually copy the necessary settings. If I can migrate the settings all at once though that would certainly be easier.

also, I am migrating from Centos 5 32 bit to Centos 5 64 bit. Any issues or things to consider with that?

Thanks for the help.

Well, I haven't heard of issues with the spam and virus settings not working after upgrading. But that may just be a sign of how long you've been using Virtualmin :-)

Under normal circumstances, generating backups in Virtualmin, and then restoring them to another server, is a great way to migrate. All settings should be migrated.

And I'd like to think that would help in your case.

I think my suggestion would be to give that a shot, do some testing, and see if things work for you. If they don't work, let us know, as that's likely something we can get corrected.

Here is the thread I mentioned before. Though I seem to indicate I fixed things, it didn't end up working out that way. I still get viruses come through all the time, even the eicar test ones...

Okay, reviewing the problem in that thread... I do suspect that if you setup Virtualmin on your new server by using the install.sh script -- when you migrate your Virtual Servers to it, it should just work!

I don't think the problem is in your individual Virtual Server settings. I suspect it's an issue that will be corrected with the settings that are generated during a new Virtualmin install.

I'd try migrating all the domains using Virtualmin's backup/restore... and from there, it should be straight forward to correct any outstanding issues.

Migrating from 32 bit to 64 bit is no problem, there's nothing in the backups that is tied to the distro architecture.
