how much memory should dom0 consume?

Hi,

I hope someone can help with this. One of our servers is a bit unstable and I just want to double check how much RAM dom0 should be using, running CloudMin GPL?

Howdy,

Are you seeing an issue with how much RAM is in use?

How much RAM is in use is determined by the services running and how they're being used... but Cloudmin itself is actually rather small, and is just a Webmin module. The needs of Cloudmin are more related to the disk space needed to store disk images, if you're using it to provision new VPS's.

You can tell how much RAM Cloudmin (and thus, Webmin/Virtualmin) are using by looking at the miniserv.pl processes running.

Does that answer your question?

When I login to Cloudmin, I see this:

Real memory 5.82 GB total, 4.35 GB used

And it's rather unstable, needs to be hard rebooted manually from time to time. So I'm trying to figure out what's causing the problem. Another similar specced server which runs HyperVM doesn't give any problems, with more VM's running on top of it than this one.

Howdy,

Well, the key would be to review what all is taking up RAM.

The first thing I'd do is to get a first hand look at the RAM in use on your server, by logging in as root via SSH, and typing: free -m

What output do you get from that command?

Then, I'd suggest reviewing what processes you see running in a "ps auxw", and make sure they should all be running, and that none are taking up an abnormally large amount of RAM.

Feel free to post your process list here if you'd like a few extra eyes taking a look to see if it's normal :-)

It seems that "miniserv.pl" uses up the most resources, but also that it could be a memory leak, or runaway process. Look at this:

What do you suggest I do with this?

What output do you get if you run:

ps auxw | grep miniserv

That should show a little extra info about the processes.

I did some goole on this, just after posting my response and the only posts related to miniserv.pl was related to large spam filter on virtualmin.

But, since I wanted to move this server to a CloudMin commercial one, I thought I'd just uninstall Webmin completely and reinstall it from CloudMin. Since then it hasn't giving problems yet.
