What does BIND do? Do I need it if I my domains nameservers are not on this machine?

Hi there, I want to reduce the systems running on my VPS. Do I need bind? I haven't had it installed on my manually managed machine and wonder if I have missed something. All of my domains are controlled elsewhere and pointed to the VPS.

Cheers in advance.

Howdy,

Nope, if you aren't using your server as a nameserver for all of your domains, you don't need BIND.

What you'd need to do is make sure the "BIND DNS Domain" feature in Edit Virtual Server -> Enabled Features is disabled for your domains. Once that's the case, you can go into System Settings -> Features and Plugins, and disable the "BIND DNS Domain" feature there.

Lastly, you'd then want to go into Webmin -> Networking -> Network Configuration -> Hostname and DNS Client, and set the "DNS servers" there to point to the correct nameservers, you wouldn't want to be using "127.0.0.1".

After you do all that, you can then disable the BIND service.
