question about backup

Hello,

I have a couple questions regarding backup of the virtual servers and copying them to another physical server.

first question, what is the best way to copy also NOT move the virtual server to another hardware server but just copy it and than I would just disable it on the old hardware server and change the ip address for that domain which means point it to new server ?

second question, if I have a Webmin modules backup and all Virtual servers backup, is it possible to set up a new server hardware and just install clean Webmin/Virtualmin from scratch and than just restore the Webmin modules and Virtualmin virtual servers will it work ? and do I need to have the SAME server name on the new server as we had on the old one in order to make it possible for restore..... ?

Thank You

Amel

Howdy,

To copy a Virtual Server to a new server -- you can just generate a backup of that domain, copy the backup to the new server, and then restore that backup.

if I have a Webmin modules backup and all Virtual servers backup, is it possible to set up a new server hardware and just install clean Webmin/Virtualmin from scratch and than just restore the Webmin modules and Virtualmin virtual servers will it work ?

A Webmin module backup won't necessarily work across different Linux distribution version. If it's the same Linux distribution version, that should work fine. If it's a different Linux distribution version, copying Webmin modules and their configs might cause problems.

You could, however, generate a backup of your Virtualmin settings, which would work fine on different Linux distribution versions.

Also, here is documentation of migrating to a new server:

I understand everything now, this is what I tough, but I was not 100% sure... now I understand it.....

We are going to migrate to new physical server, but the same OS CentOS 6.2 64 Bit... so we can restore Webmin backup as well in this case...

Thank You for very great explanation and very useful link !!

ps: what about the Virtualmin License in this case ? we have purchased Virtualmin License for this server, but when we install the Virtualmin on the new server how can we "move" this license to the new server as the old one will not be used later....

I know how to add the license to the new server via CLI, but is there any kind of the "unregister" license on this old server we are using now before we can add it to the new server ? how this works ??

You can use Virtualmin Pro on two servers during a migration.

Whenever you're done with the original server, just remove Virtualmin from there -- a few days after the Virtualmin license manager stops seeing the license on that server, it'll be dissociated from your account.
