Spamtrap - warning: unable to create lock file Permission denied

Hi People

I had a call from one of our users saying that when sending aam email to spamtrap they get a bounce saying cannot append message to file /var/virtualmin-traps/spam/12525752132198: error writing message: File too large

The logs show warning: unable to create lock file /var/virtualmin-traps/spam/12525752132198.lock: Permission denied

I have checked for a lock file in /var/virtualmin-traps/spam/ but there are none. There are a number of files with numerical names like "1372487373293".

I notice that they are all zero bite sizes except the one associated with the user having difficulty and that file is 51MB. The user and group are both "root" and the perms are set to 666.

Anyone have any ides of how I can resolve this?

Just an update.

Yesterday I sent an email to spamtrap using another account and checking the files in /var/virtualmin-traps/spam/ I see that the numerically named file for that account then had a size of 15k and is still the same this morning.

Hi people,

Well I have been working on this problem but not getting anywhere.

I have seen elsewhere that the processing of spamtrap is done using spamtrap.pl within Webmin Scheduled Functions. I ran that using the "Run selected functions" button and immediately went to a screen saying

Running function run_cron_script in Virtualmin Virtual Servers ..

.. done

but the size of the file /var/virtualmin-traps/spam/12525752132198 remained at 51MB.

So I ran "/etc/webmin/virtual-server/spamtrap.pl" in the run command box (Running processes dialog). CPU usage went up to around 100% for over an hour and I had to terminate it.

Now, I guess that as the file is 51MB that might no be surprising (?). To help further in tracking this down I figure it would be a good idea to reduce that file down to a small size or even empty because I have another file in /var/virtualmin-traps/spam which is only 15k.

So, the question is, can I simply delete that 51MB file or do I need to do something else?

It seems that this is the only user sending to spamtrap.

Any help tracking this down would be very gratefully received

CentOS Linux 5.9
Webmin version 1.630
Virtualmin version 4.01 Pro.

Howdy,

I'm unfortunately not sure what the cause of that issue is.

Now, you can certainly delete any of the files in "/var/virtualmin-traps/spam/", those should all just be spam messages that have been sent to the spamtrap address. You could always review them first to verify that.

And if it's a problem, you could always temporarily disable the spamtrap address for that account until you get this issue figured out, if it's causing problems.

Regarding how to get to the bottom of what's going on -- you'd probably need to file a bug report using the Support link above. Unfortunately, Jamie is traveling at the moment, and wouldn't respond as fast as usual.

He will be able to help, it'll just take a little longer for him to reply.

Thanks Eric,

I have found another post (in Issues) which is remarkably similar in symptoms.

I have added a post to that, it might help both.

Thanks for your post.
