Errors when sending email outside own domain

I am running Ubuntu Server 12.04 with Virtualmin using the setup script and loving all that I am learning from this process, alas, I am at a loss for an email issue I'm having.

So I am unable to send email outside of my own domain but I can receive fine, and emails between accounts on the same domain work fine. I have Verizon FIOS which is indeed blocking port 25 so in Webmin I changed some Postfix settings under "SMTP Authentication And Encryption". What I changed was the option for "Send outgoing mail via host", I changed this from "Deliver Directly" to "smtp.verizon.net:465" and I put my Verizon account username and password in the area's for them under "SMTP login to outgoing mail host". I am also using "Use SASL SMTP authentication?" set to "yes". So whereas before I was getting timeout errors due to port 25 being blocked, I am now getting the following:

Jul 23 22:14:09 mutta postfix/smtp[7452]: CLIENT wrappermode (port smtps/465) is unimplemented Jul 23 22:14:09 mutta postfix/smtp[7452]: instead, send to (port submission/587) with STARTTLS

I've been dealing with this problem in all sorts of ways for over a week and was hoping to not have to post for help hahaha, but here I am.

Howdy,

Can you use port 587 rather than 465?

It sounds like the error you're getting is suggesting that it won't work on port 465, but 587 may do the trick.

I just noticed the verizon notice that they're disabling their previous smtp host and am running into the same issue.

smtp.verizon.net does not accept connections on port 587. As far as I can tell I haven't found instructions on dealing with the change.
