minimum requirements to try out certification

hello -

when i first installed virtualmin, i used the defaults and didn't bother with the certification. so, as always, when i go to my normal virtualmin website:

https://marksVirtualminInstallation.com:10000/

i continue as always to get the message:

===

Your connection is not private -- Attackers might be trying to steal your information blah blah

===

i want to try out HTTPS:// a new website. but when i just put HTTPS:// in front of an existing site, sometimes it works (sort of) but most of the time i get:

=====

This webpage is not available - err_connection_timed_out

====

what is the virtualmin server doing in order to use https:// without a certification, and is it possible to access any website without a certification, and just get the same warning message that virtualmin does ?

Howdy,

It sounds like you're referring to an SSL certificate.

You do indeed have an SSL certificate -- it's self-signed. That means it was not purchased from a company.

That's no problem -- you may receive a browser warning when that occurs, but that's safe to ignore.

Self-signed SSL certificates usually generate a browser warning message, commercial SSL certificates do not.

Just click the button to continue past the browser warning the self-signed SSL certificate, and then you can continue on to Virtualmin.

sorry but maybe you misunderstand my question. i was wondering how virtualmin set up the SSL certificate.

when go into virtualmin, i notice my primary domain name does NOT have the "SSL website enabled" checked, and i would have thought this checkbox needed to be checked, after reading the documentation, step six:

https://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/tutorial/how-to-add-an-ssl-cert...

why is this checkbox not checked? isnt this critical for using the HTTPS:// prefix?

my question primarily is how can i set up another website and be "self-signed" like my primary website that i use to log into virtualmin is.

Howdy,

Webmin and Virtualmin have their own SSL certificate by default.

The websites for the various domains within Virtualmin don't have enabled by default though. It's up to the administrator to decide which websites should have SSL enabled.

If you wish to enable SSL for a domain within Virtualmin that is served by Apache, you can enable the SSL feature you're referring to.

Doing that will create a self-signed SSL certificate for your domain, which will allow users of that website to use "https"//".

Does that answer your question?

Does that answer your question?

yes - and here i thought i was so smart by assuming that that checkbox would have been marked.....

thank you very much!

UPDATE: i tried what you suggested and it worked just like you said, again, THANK YOU!
