Operating System Support in Virtualmin Professional and GPL

Virtualmin runs on top of Webmin. Webmin is compatible with nearly every UNIX-based Operating System on the planet, and so Virtualmin can, with a little work, run on just about all of those same systems. However, we offer an automated installation script, as well as a well-maintained software updates system, for a few very popular Operating Systems. If you're just starting out with Virtualmin, and want to have an easy installation process and smoothly running system, we strongly recommend you choose from the following Grade A supported Operating Systems.

Grade A Supported Systems

Grade A systems have an automated installation script, a well-maintained software repository for updates, and are expected to work "out of the box" if you run the install script on a freshly installed system running one of these operating systems. We recommend these for most users.
  • CentOS 4 and 5 on i386 or x86_64
  • RHEL 5 on i386 and x86_64
  • Debian 4.0 on i386 or amd64
  • Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and 8.04 LTS on i386 or amd64
Only CentOS 4 and 5, Debian 4.0 and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on i386 and x86_64/amd64 are supported for automated installation of Virtualmin GPL at this time.

Grade B Supported Systems

Grade B systems have one or more minor problems that make them less desirable for use with Virtualmin. We do support them, both in our automated installer, and via the software updates repository, but they will likely be less comfortable for long-term use on a server and we don't recommend them. Usually, the problems with these systems are due to short life-cycle or issues with package management.
  • RHEL 4 on i386 and x86_64
  • Fedora 5, 6, 7 and 8 on i386 and x86_64
  • FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE on all i386 and x86_64
  • Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris 10 on Sparc and x86

Grade C Supported Systems

Grade C systems are systems that are supported by our installer, but due to low popularity are not as well-tested as we'd like. You should expect minor problems with installation or ongoing maintenance with these platforms. We will help you fix them when the problems arise, but until their popularity increases among our user base they are unlikely to get the attention they need to become Grade A or Grade B platforms. Note that we like these platforms, and they are otherwise fine platforms for server use...they just haven't been very popular, and so we don't have high confidence in their ease of use with Virtualmin.
  • SUSE 10.0 on i386 and x86_64

Grade N Supported Systems

Grade N systems are systems that are not supported by our installer at all, but are expected to work well, if you are capable of performing all of the necessary configuration and installation steps to get the other necessary components working together. A manual installation will be required, but once installed, we will support these platforms just like any of our other grade platforms.
  • Mac OS X
  • Mandriva Linux
  • Any A, B, or C system in versions not listed above

Others

If it's not on the lists above, and it's a UNIX-based OS, Virtualmin can probably still work for you. Try installing Webmin first. If it works, then you're halfway there. Ask about it in the forums and we'll try to help with the rest.

Virtualmin does not work on Windows-based Operating Systems at this time, and it is not in our near-term plans to add support for Windows-based systems.
