We installed a new site, it installed radiant 0.8.0 now when we reboot our existing 0.7.1 site crashes. If we then remove the radiant 0.8.0 gem it works again but the new site is broken. Can we either make the install not system wide or somehow get the 0.7.1 sites to always run the 0.7.1 radiant install?

I don't think so .. my understanding is that Ruby gems are system-wide. You would have to check with the Radiant developers to see if there is any way to avoid this.
