Alias for sub-servers

Hi Joe,

How can I enable Aliases for sub-servers. I have "Can manage aliases" enabled in the server template.

As the server administrator I can create aliases only for the virtual server, but i am unable to create aliases for sub-servers.

When I view the list of virtual servers, as the root administrator, I see that Aliases for sub-servers are disabled, and I am only able to create an alias for a sub-server as the root administrator.

Are you sure? The option should fall through to sub-servers. So, if it's enabled for the parent, it should be available for the sub.

If you select the sub-server in the dropdown, and then click "Create Virtual Server", is the "Alias of sub.server.tld" link there at the top?

Yes. I switch to the sub-server in question, then I click create virtual server. On the page, that loads, i have the choice of creating a sub-server for the parent server, or an alias for sub1.domain1.tld. I select alias. After I enter the alias domain data - domain2.tld, and submit it, I receive the following message: Failed to create virtual server : You are only allowed to create domains under domain1.tld.

The parent server template is set to:
be available only to: Top-level virtual servers
Can manage aliases - YES
Can choose database names? - YES
Allow sub-servers not under this domain? - YES

The child server template is set to:
be available only to: Top-level virtual servers, Sub-servers, Alias servers, Server owners
Automatic, based on other limits - YES
Can choose database names? - YES
Allow sub-servers not under this domain? - YES

I looks like I can only create an alias in the form of sub2.domain1.tld, and not domain2.tld.

Thank you.

Note that Server Templates only apply to newly created servers--those that already exist before making changes will not get the new settings. For existing servers, you'd look in the "Edit Owner Limits" page for the parent server.

The relevant options are:

Maximum allowed virtual servers (must be greater than 0)
Maximum allowed alias servers
Maximum allowed non-alias servers

The top limit applies to the other server types (though now that we've made aliases "free" that'll probably change in the future).

OK, that makes sense.

I guess I created the sub-server with the template, before I finished configuring it, so that's why creating an alias did not work.

I tried it on a different sub-server and it worked.

Thank you Joe.

Yeah, it can be a bit confusing at first to grasp that Server Templates are only used once--when creating the virtual server (or sub-server).

Thanks for the update. I'm glad things are working as you expect now.
