why not email?

I have apparently installed virtualmin successfully and have created a mail user under my new domain, choked.ca:

[root@cserver homes]# pwd /home/choked/homes [root@cserver homes]# tree . -- dave-- Maildir |-- cur |-- new `-- tmp

5 directories, 0 files

My mail to this address is bouncing and I don't know why. I have read the virtualmin file:

I am advised there to check logs for useful messages. ok:

But if this is supposed to be meaningful, I am missing something. From the bounced mail comes:

which looks reasonable but not very useful.

So I don't know where to look next. Ideas? more docs?

Hi Dave,

Excellent trouble report, thanks for all the details :-)

At the end there, you showed choked.ca as being the primary MX for your the domain, and it has IP 142.179.54.37.

However, when I try to telnet to port 25, it hangs as if my access to the SMTP port is being blocked -- which might happen if there were a firewall blocking port 25.

Is there any chance that could be the issue?

I checked port 25 and it was forwarded to the correct machine. I then telnetted to port 25 using the local ip address - 192.168.0.253 - and I was able to connect ok, send commands and mail. OK so far. Now I am off-site and am not able to telnet in on that port, although FTP works ok and so does port 80. So it seems there is in fact something stinking in the port forwarding or the firewall setup. Will check further. Thanks very much for the response.

I don't know why the response was repeated, my apologies. The router was not in fact set up properly. The tech has been by and I am now able to get mail for user@domain.tld. Thanks for your reply.

When I try to send mail from an XP unit at another location using OE6 and this server I get an error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.choked.ca', Server:
'mail.choked.ca', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E.

Googling reveals that this is a known problem with OE6. In and of itself this would not be a big deal, I rarely use OE or Windows. But the problem manifests itself with another pair of mail clients as well, squirrel mail and Incredimail (don't bother with that one.) If there is some systematic inability to send mail with the server, where would I start looking? Perhaps it would be useful to know what a successful setup looks like. Ideas?

Well, certain ISP's block incoming and/or outgoing SMTP. So a few thoughts working up to that:

* Can you verify that SMTP is still running on the server and hadn't died for some reason?

* If you see it running, can you send yourself an email using the command line on your mail server (perhaps with: cat /etc/fstab | mail -s &quot;Test Email&quot; your_address@somedomain.com)

* And if sending an email from the mail server works, are you able to telnet into port 25 of the server from the machines you're using Outlook Express and such from?

If that all works, what are some of the errors you're seeing from your other email clients?
