I'm expecting to release support for lenny this weekend.

Support isn't instant...packages have to be built, install script has to be updated, repo setup (and maintenance scripts updated to know about them), and lots of install testing has to be done (this is the time consuming part--every test run takes 20-30 minutes, so it's a very long cycle).

Great news! I was going to install Virtualmin on Lenny today but decided to check these forums first. I'll wait a few days and check back. Thanks for being on top of it!

I'm really looking forward to this release. I currently have ispconfig 2.x installed and running on Lenny, after uninstalling it are there additional steps that I may need to take in configuring my system (specifically, mail, database, php, apache, firewall, bind) to work with Virtualmin? I understand from reading the forums that I can firewall off outside access to bind port as well as long as it is running locally. Other than that, everything is running off of one server.

It's simplest to get Virtualmin working on a fresh install (and one without any live sites). There's an install.sh script that configures all sorts of goodies for you, but it's not recommended to use that if you're running a live system.

It's of course possible to get Virtualmin working with a live system, but that's the hard way :-)

Regarding BIND -- you could firewall off the BIND port, but if you're providing DNS service for your domains, no one external to your server would be able to do DNS lookups on the domains you're hosting.

And Joe is hard at work on the Lenny support, it should be available soon!

Awesome, you know, this is a brand new installation with no live sites... it wouldn't be too much trouble to start it completely fresh when the virtualmin is ready. Just save a few confs and reinstall!

Thanks for the info Andreychek!

I'm close to releasing it, though I won't be able to finish it tonight. My dog got sick last week, and we've been in and out of vets for the past several days, getting tests, X-rays, ultrasound, etc. She's having surgery tomorrow, and hopefully, I'll be back to full throttle soon after (she'll be staying over for two days for recovery, so I'll have to be on the road a bit to visit her, but otherwise I'll be back to work).

Apologies for the delay. I intended to roll it out over the weekend, but that's when things got really rough for my dog.

Too much information, huh? ;-)

<div class='quote'>i hope it's nothing serious!</div>

I'm afraid it is quite serious (it's a growth on her spleen, and a majority of such turn out to be malignant, and outcomes are generally not good), and she's kinda old. But, I've got the best veterinary surgical specialists in the valley working on her today, so I'm hopeful we'll be one of the lucky ones with a good outcome.

I'm keeping my mind on work today, and I'll know more by tonight.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Is that the best apt can do for describing the &quot;errors&quot;? ;-)

Try:

dpkg --configure webmin-virtual-server-theme

I dunno if it will have gotten far enough to make that useful...but it might give us some more errors to work with.

After doing apt-get clean I'm getting one of the errors I got before which I corrected with apt-get -f install. The error is:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
virtualmin-base: Depends: webmin-virtual-server-theme but it is not going to be installed

If I do apt-get -f install it removes virtualmin-base and I'm back to square one.

This makes no sense! If it wants it, why wouldn't it install it? Did you do an apt-get update after the clean?

So, this is Virtualmin GPL? On i386 or amd64? I need to double check the specific repository to be sure this package is working. I just don't know what else could be going on.

Howdy,

Try changing the &quot;smtpd_recipient_restrictions&quot; line to be:

[code:1]
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks permit_sasl_authenticated reject_unauth_destination

[/code:1]

And then restart Postfix (/etc/init.d/postfix restart).

I guess my question is, was that a fresh system? Had you done any tweaking with Postfix?

OK, that made a diffence...at least now it tries to send but I get 554 5.7.1 &lt;destination@emailaddy.com&gt;: Relay access denied

I read through all of the scenarios (there are a LOT!) which involve this in the forums and can't see what it may be.

The &quot;fresh&quot; system was just that.. .I installed a clean Debian 5 from 1st CD, no desktop environment no sql, mail, www, etc...

And transfered the install.sh to it through via Hyperterminal from an XP box(it had been a LONG time since I used Hyperterminal!) and ran it. Since then I have not made configuration changes except via Virtualmin and Webmin.

I did look at the main.cf file yesterday, but before I even started looking at it I made a cp of the original in case I changed something and screwed it up.

After installing Virtualmin via the script I have installed only:

arno-iptables-firewall
logwatch
fail2ban

and edited my networking files to bind my IPs to eth0.

Outlook has had a bug for many years where under some circumstances if it fails to login once, it will simply not even try again (despite giving the user every believe that it is trying again). You can see this problem when the new &quot;attempt&quot; fails to show up in the maillog. If my memory serves me correctly you have to reboot the system (yes, really) in order to make Outlook actually try to login again.

Just when I thought I had it all (con)figured out I discovered that I still have email issues. They may be a result of a few things, but in any event they are made evident in a Lenny system that had nothing but virtualmin running on a clean (no desktop, database, mail, www or laptop environment) installation prior to running the install.sh for virtualmin

I've created some webs on virtuals which coincide with the IP for eth0 and 1 that is not the eth0 IP (it is eth0:0 with its own IP) All DNS points fine using external DNS servers.

All webs and accounts were created using virtualmin with no editing that was not reversed by backing up original configuration files and testing, failing and copying virtualmin's modified files back.

Mail sent to the email addresses appears to get to the addresses, as in it is not bounced.. but it is not in usermin mbox nor is it received by a client that is checking mail &quot;succesfully.&quot;

I've read through the forums for many many many hours and read various bits of advice which have been generously offered to others with problems I have encountered along the way but, there has to be something that I am doing wrong because it just isn't working.

When sending to local addresses which I have created in virtualmin, thunderbird reports &quot;user unknown in the virtual alias table.&quot; When sending to external addys it is sent and received successfully.

Some things I am seeing that may be of interest...
hostname -f replies
my.server.name.server.name instead of my.server.name

After reading the forums I saw someone else having an issue and edited my main.cf to remove the designation from the myorigin=(in my case it was /etc/mailname but in the other users case he had entered a domain.)

line and got:
Mar 7 18:58:01 evil postfix[29775]: fatal: bad string length 0 &lt; 1: myorigin =

so I replaced the original line, myorigin= /etc/mailname

My mail.err log has beau coups of these:

Mar 7 16:19:53 evil postfix/postmap[23783]: fatal: usage: postmap [-Nfinoprsvw] [-c config_dir] [-d key] [-q key] [map_type:]file...

Any details that may help anyone help me can easily be provided... just say the word! Eric or Joe, if you guys would like access to the server (nothing at all is on it yet) let me know and I'll shoot you some credentials so you guys can take a look at what I must have hosed.

I would prefer to not manually edit files now only to find that I am doing something wrong... I seriously doubt that this is an issue with Virtualmin, and is likely a typical pebcak.

Thanks for any consideration!

Howdy,

Just to verify -- is this on a fresh Lenny install? Had you previously done any work with email/Postfix?

I'd love to see a copy of your /etc/postfix/main.cf file though -- perhaps we could get started debugging here by you sending a copy of that via email.

Could you email that, along with a link to this forum posting, to eric@virtualmin.com?

Noticed something new tonight when trying to work through this without manually fixing it...

When I add some mail/ft users in Virtualmin the mailbox isn't created in my Virtual Severs panel in Webmin. Manually creating them in Webmin didn't help, though... tried mapping to domain.name and to user@domain.name, then restarting postifx each time. My mail client (thunderbird) now gives no indication that mail delivery fails, but the udermin mailbox is still empty and cant get the mail via the client. I DO, however, receive email in the email notification (I set it to send mail to my gmail acct) that the account was created and the credentials contained therein work for FTP perfectly.

Help! Any ideas?

I did a clean and fresh install of Debian lenny and installed virtualmin pro. Everything looked pretty good with a little of config Postfix and sasl.
I have to move immediately all my Domains from an old server (this one exists until end of march) to a new one which is running lenny.

Today I`ve tried to setup a new virtual Server with a mysql database and now there seems to be a bug in virtualmin pro: virtualmin pro don't create any mysql database ( I take a look with SSH under /var/lib/mysql). I can get a workaround with creating the database under 'manage databases' ... this is working but not the creating of tables directly with account creation of a virtual server.

Is there anybody with the same strange behavior of virtualmin pro?

Like I mentioned in an earlier post mine works, I recently set this up with a production server and is working great with the I386 Lenny network disk bare install no servers or common tools and GPL install.sh on a Intel 3500 and an amd 1700+, both are working fine even the email, I just disabled the ssl from both sides set up my mail using user@domain, make sure the default programs are turned on that you need to use such as spam and so on and look in the webmin Bootup and Shutdown page, set it up to your needs.
