Virtualmin roadmap?

Hi all,

what's in store for the coming months and years, regarding the development of Virtualmin and it's surrounding products? Where's development heading to? Regards,

Christian

We try not to pre-announce, and we try not to plan too far ahead. And, we really try not to promise things that might not come to pass.

So, keep in mind that these are idle ramblings about things we've actually be working on, or talking about in company meetings lately.

But, here's a few hints for Virtualmin:

A lot more focus on virtual machine installations of Virtualmin. This fits in with our focus on cloud computing, and using Virtualmin with Cloudmin.

Specifically, low memory and reduced resource usage options for Virtualmin on virtual machines. nginx support in Virtualmin is part of this agenda (I hesitated before adding that sentence, as it's still at least two or three months out, and I don't want folks inundating us with demands to be part of testing or whatever, before there's even any code to test...but it's perhaps the most interesting for a lot of folks, and we seem to have recently come to a consensus that nginx fits our goals for a smaller Virtualmin footprint on virtual machines).

Cloudmin:

More virtualization technologies support. Probably KVM is next on the agenda.

Better storage management. Storage for cloud computing is a hard problem...we're spending a lot of time researching right now to find some solution to expandable/reliable/distributed storage.

Webmin:

Many of the features of the Virtualmin System Information page, and the related collectinfo tool have been merged into Webmin's next release. Because Webmin is becoming our "agent" for Cloudmin deployed virtual machines that don't run Virtualmin, we wanted all of that data to be available everywhere Webmin was available. (Webmin, as you may know, is a lot less invasive than Virtualmin; it does nothing until told to do so, and so it can run pretty much anywhere without concern.)

Everything:

All of our products are getting a UI overhaul. This one is actually probably the biggest obvious change...and it will take the most work. I'm planning to hire someone soon to help out with this, as it's such a big job. I don't know how long this will take, as I'm not sure how hard it will be to find a really great frontend developer with just the right skills to join our team.

Products that have no name yet:

We are also planning to introduce three new products in the next three to six months. Our jobs page (not visible yet, but will be in a few hours) will probably provide hints about what one of those products is. The other two will be surprises, but all fit comfortably into our cloud computing vision.

The Website:

I've recently fixed a few quirks in the shopping cart, and I'm hoping to make a few more improvements, particularly in the area of renewals and upgrades in the near future.

Enabling affiliate sales is also something I'd like to get to soon. We have a lot of folks that aren't really running businesses that suit the reseller system, but they are in a position to deploy Virtualmin for clients, and we'd like to make sure they get some credit for those kinds of sales.

I'm working on the video versions of Eric's awesome step-by-step tutorials from the documentation. This one is time-consuming, due to voice-over recording/editing and such.

So what were you wishing I'd mentioned, but didn't? ;-)

Are there any news?

When there's news, I'll post about it. Don't worry, I'm not going to keep it a secret when we have a better looking theme. ;-)

That's great news!

Majority of current installs I do are on small VPS's, so the memory savings and performance gains would be a very welcome from the addition of the nginx to power http rather then the bulky apache. Hope you do go ahead with these plans and wish you the best thier in development :)
