Welcome to the Virtualmin GPL installer, version 1.0.5

WARNING:

The installation is quite stable and functional when run on a freshly installed supported Operating System, but upgrades from existing .wbm- based systems, or systems that already have Apache VirtualHost directives or mail users, will very likely run into numerous problems. Please read the Virtualmin Administrators Guide before proceeding if your system is not a freshly installed and supported OS.

This script is not intended to update your system! It should only be used to install Virtualmin, on a supported OS. If you have previously installed Virtualmin via this script or the GPL version of this script, upgrades and updates should be handled within Virtualmin itself. Once Virtualmin is installed, you never need to run this script again.

The systems currently supported by install.sh are: CentOS 4 and 5 on i386 and x86_64 Debian 5.0 and 6.0 on i386 and amd64 Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS on i386 and amd64

If your OS is not listed above, this script will fail. More details about the systems supported by the script can be found here:

Well, I don't any errors there... can you attach the virtualmin-install.log file that it mentions at the end there?

Also, are you by chance on a VPS of some sort? A common cause of issues is when using a VPS with too little RAM. What output do you see when running "free -m"?

might have to back to umbutu... so far no one has noticed there sits down, lol.

I don't know how to copy and paste with vi. but when i read it it said the same thing.

BTW, it was 1 partition lvm (beginner) first I had separate partitions for /home /usr /var didn't seem to mater.

I have been using virtualmin for quite a few years, and started using the install.sh last year. It has always worked fine... This is the first time I've used debian???

Howdy,

Well, both Debian and Ubuntu should work fine. The installer certainly shouldn't bail out there.

As far as the install log goes -- rather than copying and pasting it, you could just attach the entire file to this post.

However, before you do that -- one thing you could try is to manually run the command that failed, and see if you can coax an error message out of it.

Try running this command as root:

apt-get install postfix postfix-pcre webmin usermin ruby libapache2-mod-ruby libxml-simple-perl libcrypt-ssleay-perl unzip zip libfcgi-dev bind9 spamassassin spamc procmail libnet-ssleay-perl libpg-perl libdbd-pg-perl libdbd-mysql-perl quota iptables openssl python mailman subversion ruby irb rdoc ri mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common postgresql postgresql-client awstats webalizer dovecot-common dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d proftpd libcrypt-ssleay-perl awstats clamav-base clamav-daemon clamav clamav-freshclam clamav-docs clamav-testfiles libapache2-mod-fcgid apache2-suexec-custom scponly apache2 apache2-doc libapache2-svn libsasl2-2 libsasl2-modules sasl2-bin php-pear php5 php5-cgi libgd2-xpm libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mysql

Does that work? if not, what error does it give you?

Sorry, thought it might be too late for you. I am in Hawaii. I have a couple of people who would complain...

I installed Ubuntu (dedicated server), and it seems to be installing...

Worked!

I would still like to reinstall Debian, but have to know what happened... If you have any clues, let me know.

Thank you for your time.

Howdy,

Well, next time that you're able to try the install on Debian -- try the troubleshooting step I mentioned above if you run into that problem again, and we can work from there :-)

I'm glad you got it working on Ubuntu though!

It works but the most important backup would not restore

Don

Warning - the following features were enabled in one or more of the domains in the backup, but are not enabled on this system : Plugin virtualmin-google-analytics

This backup cannot be restored without breaking the configuration of this system.

Sat, 07/02/2011 - 09:33
andreychek

You would get that if the backup depends on a given feature that was installed and enabled on your old server, but isn't configured on your new server.

Try installing the virtualmin-google-analytics plugin. You can do that by running:

apt-get install webmin-virtualmin-google-analytics

Then, go into System Settings -> Features and Plugins, and make sure it's enabled. Once you do that, your restore should work.

That did it. Thanks a lot!

I might try debian next weekend. I should have came to you way earlier, but thought it was something I did, so I kept reinstalling... till I was brain dead LOL I have used this script a few times and it always worked good.

Thank You again Don

Hi Eric,

I have been through this before, but can't remember (getting old sucks :-) Any ideas?

If the message was received by the server -- the next step is to look in the procmail logs, and see where it delivered it. You can see those in /var/log/procmail.log. You should be able to determine what user and folder it was delivered to.

-Eric

Sat, 07/02/2011 - 13:36
seemeinhi

It was delivered to the right place...

To:my-hi@my-hi.com User:my-hi Size:8452 Dest:/home/my-hi/Maildir/new/1309630757.9082_0.donswebservices Mode:None

Inbox and folders in ~/Maildir is checked in dovecot

Sat, 07/02/2011 - 15:38
andreychek

So that looks like it was delivered to the "my-hi" account -- is that who you were logging in as?

You might try a different email client, just to rule it out as a possibility. Usermin would be a good test. If you access port 20000 on your server, and log in as my-hi, do you see the email then?

-Eric

Sat, 07/02/2011 - 15:51

Yes there is mail there

I use outlook for my wife's email and it worked. I use a china program called foxmail. It has always worked before. Getting closer :-) The first time I did all this, was with webmin first. Took me 5 or 6 days... But, I 'used to' like that sort of thing...

Could it be the "type of connection" that is my problem?

Sat, 07/02/2011 - 19:15
andreychek

Well, I'm not familiar with Foxmail... though if it works on a different client, than Dovecot is working correctly. That means there's likely some kind of setting in your mail client causing the problems.

You could always take a look at /var/log/mail.log when you check your mail on Foxmail to make sure you see the incoming connection, and that there aren't any errors.

Also, if Foxmail has a spam folder, you may want to check that, just to be sure that the email wasn't classified as spam.
