When Virtualmin Support CentOS 6?

Hi, Cent OS 6 is out. I have installed it in my server. However, when I try to install the virtualmin, I found it didn't support Cent OS 6. Could I know when the virtualmin will support Cent OS 6? As it is quite urgent to me. Thank you very much.

Howdy,

I suspect it'll be a few weeks... plus or minus a few days :-)

Joe has 64 bit Scientific Linux 6 support nailed down, and is working out some details on the 32 bit version. It shouldn't be hard to port that work over to CentOS 6.

There's still some work to do to finish all that up, but it is being worked on!

Hi,

We are also waiting for the CentOS 6 support, already have a server standing by.

Since the 64bit is already nailed, maybe you could consider to release the x64 part already? So the x64 users don't have to wait for the 32bit version.

Thanks

I read the article on the Cloudmin issue with bad detection. Will it work to remove the word "Linux" from /etc/centos-release?

Currently I show: CentOS Linux release 6.0 (Final)

Funny thing is on my 5.7 install I don't have a centos-release. I have a redhat-release which shows: CentOS release 5.6 (Final)

If I clone the file and rename the centos-release to redhat-release with the suggested change, are there any issues to worry about?

Thanks for your great job.

An update would be greatly appreciated. From what i've seen so far virtualmin is great. But i need it for my new server which is running centos 6.

Thanks, Martin

Reading this thread, http://www.virtualmin.com/node/18955 and http://www.virtualmin.com/node/17463 I understand there is no CentOS 6.0 support yet, however on http://www.virtualmin.com/node/18822#comment-84416 they are already talking about installations and JamieCameron even suggests some workaround about the issue of misdetecting the OS. So my question is there any publicly available attempts of Virtualmin installations for CentOS 6.0 already?

You're confusing Cloudmin and Virtualmin. They are not the same thing. Cloudmin has a very different (and much smaller) set of dependencies, and can usually be installed manually without much pain...the install script is just a bit of a helper to setup the repos and such. Virtualmin, on the other hand touches dozens of configuration files, has a number of binary dependencies that have to be built for every new OS, and testing takes much longer because the installation process is much slower.

CentOS 6 support is very nearly finished. I'm in the midst of testing it now. All packages are built...so, what remains is just making sure the configuration all happens correctly (but this is very time-consuming, since every test install takes ~20 minutes, and I have to find everything that went wrong after each test run).

The Virtualmin install script will not currently work on CentOS 6, I assure you of that, and it is not merely a detection issue. But, it will be supported very, very soon.

Now I see. Dear Joe, thank you for the explanation and for your efforts to get Virtualmin to work with CentOS 6.0 for us all. Looking forward to hear news on this very soon. I hope we are talking about days here, or weeks, but not months.

Deleting duplicate message.

Using the opportunity, I would like to inform that virtualmin.com becomes unavailable very often, which is not excusable for the entity offering server software. I believe you have to change hosting or better adapt your server to serve Drupal installation.

Agreed. And it's a fact which I first mentioned in the issue tracker about 9 months ago.. and ever since we've been promised a "migration to a really powerful new server"... Which still has not happened, obviously. This Sunday e.g., during my morning hours (UTC+1), like on mostly every Sunday, the site was down for several hours. I gave up reporting these incidents in the issue tracker meanwhile though.

I have an empty server in data center waiting for CentOS 6.0 installation.

I wonder what is better - to wait for the release of Virtualmin and install them together or I can order CentOS 6.o installation for now and later can install and configure Virtualmin on top of the OS?

Basically you can install Virtualmin anytime, but it is suggested - especially if you're not quite well-versed in terms of hosting software configuration - to install it on a pristine system and let it do the configuration for you.

If you start using the system, as in create web pages and email users, and later want to control those through Virtualmin, you're in for a probably rough ride. ;)

I was afraid so. Considering it is not definite exactly when Virtualmin for CentOS 6.0 is coming, I really wanted to install minimum software to start serving webpages. I don't need e-mailing and stuff, but what if I install and configure BIND for now and later, when Vitualmin arrives, uninstall it? Would then Virtualmin's installer script consider my server as a fresh install?

Well, it's a bit hard to foretell the exact circumstances, so I'm a bit reluctant to say "yes". :) I'll say "it should work", if you remove anything that could get in the installer's way. Which applies to web pages (Apache/MySQL etc.) too. It's of course possible to later import that stuff into Virtualmin, but can be, depending on circumstances, tricky.

I think the best course of action would be, if you wish to start serving pages now, make a backup of the relevant user files (web pages, databases, email) when CentOS 6 support arrives, reinstall the server, put Virtualmin on, create your domains with it and restore the backup into the directories that Virtualmin creates.

Locutus, thank you for your advice. The problem is that it is remote server on colocation and every install costs me money. So I guess I just will go ahead and install http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-centos-6.0-x86_64-ispconfig-3-p4

is there a newsletter I can subscribe to so I'm notified as soon as it's released for centos 6? I too am patiently waiting to set up my new server and migrate from cpanel.

Okay, CentOS 6 and Scientific Linux 6 support for Virtualmin has been announced here:

https://www.virtualmin.com/node/19153

Give it a try and let us know how it works for you :-)
