DNS and Nameservers on fresh install

Hi

Real newbie question coming up.... !

Just installed Virtualmin onto a VPS and I have to say that having used Plesk for years this is a very pleasent breath of fresh air.

Anyway back to the question. My install was on top of a fresh copy of CentOS 5.7 and it all went fairly well. However I have a few queries around DNS and Nameservers. Basically do I have to make my host domain an actual server as well ? Whats confusing me is where the actual DNS and Nameservers are set if it's on a fresh install with no added servers. Or do I add the host domain as an actual server and set the DNS and Nameservers in there ?

Also, what the best way of doing this. Should I have set my nameservers to point to my IP address before installing Virtualmin or is it fine to do this later ?

Any advice appreciated :)

Many thanks

M.

Howdy,

Whats confusing me is where the actual DNS and Nameservers are set if it's on a fresh install with no added servers. Or do I add the host domain as an actual server and set the DNS and Nameservers in there ?

On a new install, BIND will be performing DNS lookups for any DNS queries that your server needs to perform.

As for your nameservers -- whether your server will act as a nameserver for your domains, or whether a third party does that -- that's up to you, and it depends on how you prefer to set it up.

If you want your server to act as a nameserver for the domains on your system, there's documentation regarding that here in the section named "How do I setup nameservers for my server":

http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/dns/faq

You don't need to add the domain in your hostname as a Virtual Server unless you need Virtualmin to setup a DNS record for it.

Does that answer all of your questions?

Hi Eric

Many thanks for that info.

Think I have it all sorted now, think BIND did a wobby at first install but I've done it again and all seems good now. Added a few test servers and they all seem to be working ok. Left the nameservers with the domains registrar for now.

Many thanks for the explanation, I'm sure there'll be more questions.... !
