[SOLVED] Why do I have to use HTTPS to get my one pic to load on my website?

I got Virtualmin installed last night. After uploading my new site, the pages were NOT acting right.

1) The single pic on each web page showed as a broken link. It wldn't load.

2) My style sheet seemed unaccessible as there was no style to my pages. (this is intermittent)

And strangest of all, I can eliminate the above by forcing pages to use the https protocol.

You can view this @ www.dfwit.co

The first the pages do not use https, while the last three do. The same pic used on every page won't load for the pages not called by https.

Is there something I'm missing with Virtualmin? When my website ran from /var/www/ I never had these issues. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not impressed with the thought of having to run my website under SSL. Makes it seem like my site is a fortress rather than one that's user friendly.

Thanks, Cowboy

Hi,

If you're using Virtualmin, why are you placing your website in the "/var/www" directory tree? When you create Virtual Server, the website files typically live in: /home/username/public_html

Thanks for replying. It seems my words confused you. When i ran it from /var/www/ it ran fine. But now that I use Virtualmin, and my content is in public_html, my one and only website pic fails to load unless I use https protocol. My site is where it's suppose to be, but that one pic of mine just won't load unless I use https.

Any ideas?

I installed Virtualmin because I needed mail capabilities. And that works fine for me. All in all, this seems to be a very nice alternative to using a webhosting service. I mean, I was elated when i sent/received emails from my domain, only to find that the one pic i use on every page of my site won't load unless I use https.

Please go to my site and see for yourself. www.dfwit.co

The last three links there use https, and the pic loads. But the first three don't, and the pic fails. You can view the page source and see that the pic is called the same way for each page. I don't understand why it's working this way. So any help to clear this up will be greatly appreciated.

Howdy,

Hmm, your various links and the image all appear to be working for me, using both http and https.

Are you still seeing a problem? If so, what's the full URL to the image you're having a problem with? If you go to that URL, what error do you see? And do any errors show up in the logs, located at $HOME/logs/error_log?

Hi Eric. Thanks for responding. I did check the error log as you suggested and found this:

File does not exist: /home/dfwit/public_html/images/blue_world.jpeg, referer: http://www.dfwit.co/

You mentioned that you got the pic to load using http. It isn't working that way for me...WHOA! I just tried another laptop and the pic loaded on all pages! Now why in the world will they not load for me on MY laptop? :( That's absolutely crazy! I do all my work here. I wonder what this could be? I've seen strange before, but this just raised the bar. However, as you can see, I have a log file there that tells me that the pic file doesn't exist. Any ideas on this one, Eric?

UPDATE: On an even crazier note, I just installed Opera web browser and my site loaded properly. Must be something with Firefox.

Howdy,

Hmm, well, the image that's listed in your error log does appear to be working correctly and present. Is it possible that your browser is caching something incorrectly, and that particular error in the logs is an older one?

In the browser you were having trouble with, what happens if you go directly to this URL:

http://www.dfwit.co/images/blue_world.jpeg

If that doesn't work -- try holding down the left shift, and clicking the "Reload" or "Refresh" buttons in your browser, which causes it to refresh the cache. Does that image load for you then?

If I go directly to http://www.dfwit.co/images/blue_world.jpeg using Firefox, the pic loads. I'll work with Firefox to get this right as it works fine woth Opera. I'll get back to this soon. I have an appt in 45 mins. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again, Eric.

Hi,

I'm not quite sure what any of you folks are talking about. I've visited "http://www.dfwit.co/" and the image loads perfectly fine for me here in Google Chrome.
