The feature BIND DNS domain cannot be disabled

Dear all,

get this error when I do "Re-Check Config" in Virtualmin. The exact error message is:

The feature BIND DNS domain cannot be disabled, as it is used by the following virtual servers : example.org example.com . .. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin.

Do you have an idea what causes this? Where can I enable/disable the feature BIND DNS?

P.S. I use the DNS manager at linode.com, where the sites are hosted.

Insights are most appreciated, many thanks in advance,

Alex

Failed to save enabled features : Virtualmin is configured to setup DNS zones, but this system is not setup to use itself as a DNS server. Either add 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS servers, or turn off the BIND feature on the module config page.

Will try to add 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS servers.

Dear Ronald,

where can I add 127.0.0.1, do you have an idea? Many thanks in advance to drop a line on where to go to do that.

webmin - networking - Network Configuration, Hostname and DNS Client, add it to DNS servers and click safe.
When you leave that page do not click apply or your eth cards will go awry and you'll be disconnected from your server.

Added 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS servers in the "Hostname and DNS Client" section of the network configuration settings. The initial error is gone now.

Many thanks Ronald.

Best regards,

Alex

We are having the same issue but since we don't use dns on this server I'm concerned that adding the 127. IP will cause problems. Will it? To review: We have the yellow warning box. Bind shows as "off" on the System Info page. Click on the link to check and we get the error listed above. We go to the module config page and get errors stating BIND can't be disabled when we uncheck and save it. We have another production server that doesn't have this message and is set up in all above respects the same with the same versions and updates.

Bind is handled by seperate servers so we have it turned off on these machines. If I point to 127.0.0.1, isn't that likely to cause problems?

Howdy,

Hmm... so, if you go into System Settings -> Features and Plugins, and disable the "BIND DNS Domain" feature -- does that work, or do you get an error of some kind when doing that?

Hello andreychek,

I am writing you, coz I can see you online.. :) If you dont mind to answer... i am facing prob installing virtualmin of dedicated sever...

I think will have many.. firs... I want to stop and disable BIND, but cant? [from this page... Features and Plugins
This page allows you to select the core features and plugins that are available for use by virtual servers. The checkbox in the first column determines if it is available at all, while the box in the Default column controls whether or not it is enabled by default.]

Could you kindly put some light on me?

You can only disable the BIND DNS feature if no Virtual Servers are using it... so the first step is to remove that feature from each Virtual Server.

You can do that one at a time through the GUI, or all at once using the command line tools -- run "virtualmin modify-feature" to see the available options.

Once you've removed the BIND DNS feature from all the domains, you should be able to disable that in the Features and Plugins page.

We get this error.

"Error Failed to save enabled features : The procmail command procmail has 0 permissions, when it should be setuid and setgid to root. Email may not be properly delivered or checked for spam."

We have SpamAssasin and ClamAV turned off as another server is handling those tasks.

the error message is not bind related.
what if you disable mail and bind in the features and plugin? will it go through then?

Can't disable mail. It is a production server.
