Multiple domains on my local computer (192.168.1.4)

Hi, all.

I'm trying to learn how to administer a VPS. So I've installed on my PC VirtualMin GPL.

I've succeeded to create the main 'server' and I succeed to connect to the default domain by http://utu/.

Now I would like to create 'clients', that is I would like to create websites so that owners could administer themselves.

I don't have any domains yet. So I would like to create them on my local computer.

I tried to do that reading some papers found on the net, but I failed.

Can someone help me?

Is there any guide to read?

I hope I was enough clear about my intention :)

Thanks a lot.

I should add that I tried to follow the instruction "Click on the Automatic Virtual Hosts icon." as said in "How do I make domains available before the DNS changes are made at the registrar?"

But I didn't find any "Automatic Virtual Hosts icon" :(

I tried to apply the last and best way, suggested in the above mentioned document, but I didn't find any "Automatically create alias domain option" :(

Please help me!

you can add that in the server template.
virtualmin - system settings - server templates, choose a template then scroll or use dropdown menu to virtual server creation

Thank you, ronald.

I'm really shocked by the entanglement of this application :(

I'm reading all the documents about it, but I still fail to understand how to manage a simple, common scenario: administrator, reseller, clients on a local computer! Do you suggest me a clearer guide/tutorial?

I think I'll go back to Plesk or CPanel, which I used without spending so much time to learn how use them!

Thank you very much.

The whole trick is to clone the default server template and go wild with experimenting. This way you will learn fast by trial and error. The default template has average settings commonly used and is pretty useable in production environments.

If you want to be a sys. admin then you want to know about the ins and outs of your system in order to understand and control your server.
Since webmin/virtualmin are very powerful, more so than cpanel and plesk together, you will have more options and thus a steeper learning curve.
Webmin will let you handle almost anything on the server through a webinterface and is friendlier than the command line.

Once configured, virtualmin is a breeze for creating and maintaining domains

Thank you, Ronald, for helping me.

The first think I would like to learn is configure a 'client' website and to try to manage that website as the client should do. Obviously I need to do this in my local computer.

I've tried what you previously suggested but I didn't succeed to open the website as client.

I'm an "expert" on "trial and error method", I've learning everything by this method :)

But really I find it difficult to apply this method to webmin/virtualmin.

Isn't there a really step by step tutorial? By the way I'll try again following your last post.

Often when folks are having as much trouble as you are "getting" Virtualmin, it's because they installed manually, and have not configured it to use the Virtualmin theme. Did you install using our install script on a supported OS? If so, we'll go from there...if not, I'd probably recommend you start with a fresh OS install and do so first. Getting up and running with a manually installed system is time-consuming and very intimidating for folks that don't have a lot of experience with virtual hosting on Linux systems.

There are several dozen step-by-step tutorials in the documentation section of the site, covering numerous common tasks:

http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/tutorial

If you have specific questions, we'll be happy to help out.

you have created a server called utu and it is reachable through the browser, you say. Then you could login through http://utu:10000 yes? Not as root, but as the owner of that domain.
Well that should be it basically. You can create another server called whatever you like and connect to it the same way.
The basics should be the same. Is that working for you and if not what is the specific issue you have?

What OS do you have on your PC? Is the OS supported?

The Alias Domain should be something like client1.utu in your case as utu is reachable for you. So if you create a server for a client: "myclient.com" then "client1.utu" would resolve to that.

Hi Joe,

I used the install script for Ubuntu, just because I don't have any experience with virtual hosting. I've used EasyPhp locally and CPanel/Plesk remotely so far! Now I would like to learn to use a Control Panel on my personal computer, in order to install them on my remote VPS.

I've read almost all tutorials in the documentation section of the site, but they seem written for experienced folks, that's why I've written "really step-by-step". Perhaps I have to read again the documentation with more attention :(

Thank you for your readiness to help.

Hi ronald,

yes I've create a server called utu and it isn't reachable through http://utu:10000. I get the message: "This web server is running in SSL mode. Try the URL https://utu:10000/ instead" in fact I can login through https://utu:10000/.

I've created a 'client' website called "kibao" just cloning the default template, as you suggested, but I connect it neither through "http://kibao.utu" neither through "https://kibao.utu", in both cases I get the message: Page not found.

What OS do you have on your PC? Is the OS supported?

I have Ubuntu 8.04.

Where can I set the "Alias" for "kibao"? Creating "Kibao" through "Copy Default Server Template" I chose "Sub-servers" and "Server owners", did I do a mistake?

Thanks for your kind help.

I would like to restart ex novo my trial, but I've read that the uninstall procedure leaves untouched all virtual hosts.

How can I delete all of them?

Thanks
