HOW TO:? set up Mailman

I'm looking to set up a listserv and thought that GNU MailMan might be already isntalled http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman

Is MailMan part of virtualmin and if so where can i manage it? how do i get it work?

i'm looking to set up a distribution listserv so that i can have 1 email address that sends to 500+ recipients and anyone who is a subscriber can send to the list and/or remove themselves from the list

Well, Mailman would handle that for you -- though, I've been finding phpList to be a bit simpler to work with in many environments.

Mailman can be managed within Virtualmin though -- just enable the Mailman feature, and you can create lists at that point. To manage those lists, you can go to lists.your_domain.com.

However, I might suggest taking a look at phpList though, as it handles what you're looking for pretty well. The Pro version of Virtualmin has an install script for that, though it's pretty straight forward to install manually in the GPL version.

Well, it all comes down to your needs... it's difficult to say one is better than the other, they each have their benefits and drawbacks.

But in most cases on Virtualmin controlled servers (which typically implies a shared hosting box), where a user needs to send email blasts to many recipients, I've found phpList to work really well.

so will phplist create an email address on the site that all users can send to so that so if anyone on the list sends an email to: the_list_name@mysite.com it will send a message to all the memebers of the list?... i guess i need to read how to use phplist...

all i really need/want is like a distrobution list for 500+ email addresses so that any one of the 500+ users can send an email to one address 'the_list_name@mysite.com ' and all 500+ users get the email..

and a simple way to add/remove users from the list

I see, what you're after may not be what phpList does.

phpList is good for when you have one user (always the same user) who wishes to email 500+ people (ie, like a company newsletter).

If you're looking for actual mailing list functionality (any of 500 users can email each other), Mailman is better suited for that task.
