What OS to choose for Virtualmin

Hi there, long time no see!

I have a question for you guys, We have been a proud Virtualmin Pro user since november 2005 and are just about to buy a new server, our old Fedora Core 6 box has done it's work just fine... but now it's time to move the work to the new server and let the old Fedora box go to rest. Our new server is a Intel XEON X3430 2.4 GHz Quad Core, 4 GB RAM, 2x250GB SATA2 RAID 1(3ware hardware-RAID) and IPMI. We don't host that many domains(virtual servers) on our server, I think it's about 70, and approximately 500 e-mail accounts at the moment.

Now for my questions,

CentOS 5.4. Is that a good choice? or what OS do you prefer/recommend?

Should I use 32 or 64 bit OS? Pros/Cons?

Is there any known issues vith latest Virtualmin Pro and CentOS 5.4 32/64bit?

I really would appreciate your thoughts and experience!

Greetings from Sweden, Leffe (Blueforce)

Howdy,

I'll answer a few of your questions :-)

The majority of folks use CentOS... Joe and Jamie recommend it as the most tested distribution for Virtualmin.

So if you're interested in using it, go for it, it'll work just fine for you :-)

I personally happen to enjoy Ubuntu, but don't take that as a recommendation, it's just a personal preference.

Have a good one!

Yeah, CentOS seems to be pretty popular here. I never used it though, I'm just used to Debian. However, Ubuntu is interesting too, next week they will be releasing version 10.04 LTS so that might be a good choice too (as soon as virtualmin supports it). I might be switching to Ubuntu myself over the summer when I'll switch the box...

Thanks for your feedback!

It looks like it's gonna be CentOS then, but what about 32 vs 64 bit? Should I go for 64bit?

Sorry for all my boring questions, but i have not been following the Virtualmin progress for some time now. I used to check in to Virtualmin forum at least once a day before, but since our old FC6 box reached its EOL it was frustrating to see all new features and not be able to get them to our FC6 box smile.

And I thought this was the right place for my questions, Joe, Jamie and everybody else here has ALWAYS been helpful and happy to help.

If your machine has 4 GB of RAM or more, or you plan to upgrade RAM in the future, go for 64 bit.
