Update Kernel

Actually my server uses the 2.6.32 version of the kernel. I have the possibility to restart it with the 2.6.36 version.

Is there a problem doing so ? Will I have something to do/change/update after restart ? What are the benefits of a kernel update ?

Best regards.

We would recommend using the most recent kernel version available to your Linux distribution.

When using a standard distribution-provided kernel, you shouldn't have to change or modify anything in order to make use of it.

Now, looking at the kernel packages available for your Linux distribution -- it looks like the most recent kernel available for Debian 5 / Lenny is actually 2.6.26-2.

So if you're seeing 2.6.36 available to you, that likely means you're using a VPS of some sort, and your VPS provider has made some newer kernels available to you.

Before upgrading, we'd suggest talking to them, and verifying that they've tested your Linux distribution version with that kernel :-)

Also note that kernels are not our domain. We know nothing about your distro vendor's (or, in this case, whoever put newer kernels on your box) choices with regard to kernels. What kernel you run is up to you and your upstream.

So, as Eric mentioned, you'll want to ask these kinds of questions of whoever provided the non-standard kernel, rather than us. We never provide kernels in any of our repositories.
