Mail get queued up due to disk quota problems??

To VirtualMin

I am totally Newbie to VirtualMin and Webmin but I am doing the best to search forums and Google before posting. But I have a problem here I can't figure out.

I have installed a CentOS 5.6 server 64 bit and installed VirtualMin with WebMin on a 100GB disk. I have setup 5 sites and they have been working great until now (two months), when one of our customers told us that mail suddenly doesn't work any more. I looked into the maillog and I can see the following errors and it haven't worked since the 26th of April!?

May 25 13:14:16 glolinweb001 postfix/cleanup[15971]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create file incoming/46671.15971: Disk quota exceeded May 25 13:14:26 glolinweb001 postfix/cleanup[15971]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create file incoming/47729.15971: Disk quota exceeded May 25 13:14:36 glolinweb001 postfix/cleanup[15971]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create file incoming/49779.15971: Disk quota exceeded May 25 13:14:46 glolinweb001 postfix/cleanup[15971]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create file incoming/51771.15971: Disk quota exceeded

I can't see any quota errors in the system information page, but somehow there is not enough space to send mails?? We are using a mail relay server which have been setup in the "General Options" under "Postfix Mail Server" in the entry "Send outgoing mail via host".

We don't have mail's setup for the specific sites on the VirtualMin server. Only web and FTP have been activated and when I look in the quota area no one have filled out their quotes at all.

There is no visible quote issue when using the interface as mentioned above.

And no one can send mails anymore, even sites which have 1Tb but only uses 10Mb. So it sounds more to me that it is a temporary area for the postfix program been filled up??

Looking forward for any help regarding the above error.

Perhaps the postfix user is over quota?

Try going to Webmin -> System -> DIsk Quotas and checking if the postfix user or group has any quota set, and if so increase it to unlimited.

Jamie, we've been working on this issue over in the forums; I'm kind of stuck as to what the issue might be.

You can see the repquota output in the last post here:

https://www.virtualmin.com/node/18303

Do you see anything in that which might be causing an over quota notice?

I see that root has a quota set .. you should probably change that to unlimited at Webmin -> System -> DIsk Quotas.

That's the first repquota he posted... check out the second one near the bottom of the thread :-)

Root did at one point have a quote enabled, but he still seems to be seeing that error even after removing the quota.

Is this happening when sending email out via the Virtualmin system, or when the system receives email externally? If the latter, make sure the mailbox and its domain aren't over quota ..

Hi Eric and Jamie

I didn't get any notifications that you actually applied to my post here :/ But now I will, I just subscribed to the post.

I am only using the outgoing mail function on the server, I am having another mail server handling the users mail boxes. So yes, it happens when we tries to send out emails via the system from the virtual sites created on the server.

Ps. I am going to move the virtual sites to a newly created server, but I will keep this one alive so that we can look at the problem if you want's to go more deeply into it.

Looking forward to hear from you.

If possible, I would be happy to login to your system myself to see what is going wrong. I would need root SSH access though ..

Hi Jamie

No problem, could you give me your source IP so that I can setup our firewall.

Secondly, I can see that the system must be damaged because of the quota which have been active for the root user, due to the fact that new sites appear on the sites list which I haven't created. And the system has become really slow lately.

I managed to setup the new system last week and Friday I moved all the sites and configurations from the damaged installation to the new one.

Sure, my IP is 67.188.12.52

I will see what else might be broken .. but root quota shouldn't be the cause. More likely the mail bounces are due to quota on some other user..

Hi Jamie

I have created the SSH access to you. The IP for the server is : 81.7.188.84 Username : root Password : how do I give you the password?

Please be aware that I have created a new server, so all the mails currently in the queue are "old" mails.

Hi Jamie

Email sent :)

Tim

I just logged in, and noticed that the root group had a quota set, which I removed with the command edquota -g root . Mail seems to be working now ... could you check as well?

Hi Jamie

Nice, I can see that the email queue have been emptied. Eric and I only looked at the user quote and not the group quote. :)

All seems to work now, but I may think that the "limitation" somehow may have damaged the system, so I will just shut it down and delete it. Will there be any problems with the licenses or will it update the number of servers with the same licenses automatically??

Thanks again for your help regarding this issue, which I have done by myself somehow with the quote limitations :/

Will there be any problems with the licenses or will it update the number of servers with the same licenses automatically??

A few days after your current server is offline, the Virtualmin license manager will update the total number of servers it sees your server running on.

I'm glad to hear you guys figured out what was wrong. If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know!
