Change Root Password

Hi

If I login via putty to my server - issue the command passwd - to change the root password for the server -- does that affect anything in virtualmin / webmin?

Was also curious about this. On my test server here on the LAN - went to Webmin - Webmin Users - selected "root" - In the password field I selected Set to - and entered in a new password. After doing that it changed the password for logging into virtualmin - but the root password for logging into the machine remained the same. Why is that? Is the root virtual min password different that the system root password?

In light of the paragraph above - to change the root password do you just issue the passwd command and that will change it system wide? or do you need to change it with passwd cmd and go to webmin - users - root and change it there also?

Jamie, can you comment on the correct way to change both the Webmin and system password?

I ran into this myself recently, and wasn't quite sure how to change both at once :-)

This is expected .. if you want to change the root password for SSH, you need to do it at System -> Users and Groups -> root. By default this will also effect the password for logging into Virtualmin, unless you set it to something separate as you did in the Webmin Users module.

Hi

To change it do you type over the pre-encrypted password?

or select X Normal password - and type the new one in the box to the right?

and save . . .

Select "Normal password" and then enter your new password into the adjacent box.
