DNS bottleneck?

I'm not really sure what is slowing down my site but I see that it takes longer to begin loading the page rather than the actual loading of my sites. I was thinking maybe this is the fault of my hosts DNS servers which were automatically added when I installed Virtualmin. Could it work faster if I switched there two IPs on the Webmin Network Config module to Google's public DNS?

Well, I'm not familiar with your ISP or the DNS server's you're using -- but it'd be simple to try that and find out :-)

I could just change the DNS resolver IPs to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 right?

If your server is not acting as a nameserver, and the only DNS servers listed are the two for your ISP (ie, 127.0.0.1 isn't listed as one of your nameservers) -- then yes, you can change the IP's to the two you mentioned.

If your server is indeed acting as a nameserver for your domains -- I would suggest making sure that only 127.0.0.1 is listed.

Oh, it had 127.0.0.1 and also my ISP nameservers. I left thr 127.0.0.1 and changed the ISP ones to Google's public DNS.

Howdy,

Those SOA entries are fine -- they aren't the cause of any issues you're seeing.

If you are hosting DNS on your own server -- if your server is acting as a nameserver for your domains -- I would recommend not including any nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf other than your own. There's no reason to, and it'll only slow things down.

Since you seem to be seeing problems, I'd suggest removing any entries in your resolve.conf other than 127.0.0.1, and then work from there :-)

What if I just removed the DNS entries on the bottom of the Network Configuration page? Or should I clear out the resolve.conf file?

All I'm suggesting is seeing what happens if you remove nameservers other than "127.0.0.1" from your system -- it doesn't matter how you go about doing that. You could edit /etc/resolv.conf directly, or you could use Webmin's Network Configuration screen -- which also just edits /etc/resolv.conf.

Thanks, should I leave this line? domain localdomain

Yup -- all you're removing are nameserver entries, and that's not a nameserver entry -- you can leave that.

Ok it seems to be working after that. No slow downs so far after the edit.
