changing os in main server!!!

I am using right now a ubuntu 8.04 64 bits. I would like to change os to debian or Centos. I need php 5.3 and up; ubuntu 8 does not pudate php more than 5.2

My questions:

  • Which is the best solution to update my server os maintaining all the virtual servers?
Export all virtual servers and import them with a fresh new virtualmin on new os?
  • Debian? or Centos? (this is maybe the most difficult question)

Thanks in advance.

Michel.

Well, your two options are that you could either upgrade Ubuntu to 10.04 or 12.04 (which both have PHP 5.3), or you could migrate to another server, running an OS of your choice.

It's no problem to perform a migration -- you can do that by performing a full Virtualmin backup, and then restoring that full backup on the other server.

Debian? or Centos? (this is maybe the most difficult question)

If you're going to start with a new OS, I'd suggest either Ubuntu 12.04 or CentOS 6.

Debian 7 is supposed to be released in the upcoming months, which would mean Debian 6 won't be supported long after that.

The OS you use comes down to personal preference -- any of the Grade A supported OS's will work. I'd suggest using the one you're the most familiar with.
