A good step by step for newbies ? anyone.

I'm moving 12 websites to a new dedicated server and at the same time looking for a different web panel so looking here.

I've installed centos 7 and managed to install virtualmin but I'm running in to too many problems. Surely it's easy then this, I've taken 2 days so far and although I have 3 domains, I also have 3 logins, one site working and another wordpress site which seems to be reading the database but wanting to start the WP install so must think it's empty. What I need to do is;

Default domain and all the other domains under one account. Easily import my data and databases - some are 100mb - installed phpmyadmin but can't access it. I want to be able to edit files in the file manager & zip & unzip them. All my email is handled by a 3rd party service who I also use for my NS servers.

Help !

Your knowledge is almost nonexistent and i would strongly suggest to pay some SysAdmin or Vmin devs to setup your server, at least initial setup. Not doing this you will end with compromised server and big chance your hosting company will just shot down your service and your account.

You can always buy cheap VPS and learn there but if you have 12 production websites you cant rely on your limited knowledge and forum. There are too many things what can go wrong during and after installation its hard to predict what will happen. Plus is not just to install Vmin after that you must secure your server (especially dedicated) or it will become a magnet for all bad on the internet.

Now if you think its too expensive that means your 12 websites doesnt have any value to you and you are free to google up any guide how to setup your server and follow that instructions.

I've managed to sort out most think after a reinstall. I now have the websites working as subservers. But I still need a way to import these databases and I'm used to phpmyadmin so installed that which also meant another version of PHP to install :(

Problem I now have is I get this error Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_detect_encoding() in /home/kickoff3pm/domains/playmygolf.co.uk/public_html/phpmyadmin/libraries/php-gettext/gettext.inc on line 177

This seems a common error related to the path of the extensions not being found. They were remark out in my php.ini but I can't find where the are stored.

Hi, I would suggest you to read the documentation and install srv on debian or you can hire some pro or purchase pro support here on virtualmin.

Configuring/troubleshooting Debian servers is always great fun

Have you seen our YouTube channel? Might be a good start; there's also tons of docs in the Documentation section.

There's several introductory videos. Also, Stan Thompson, a Virtualmin user, posted a good series of videos about Webmin and Virtualmin. His playlist is here:

Asking specific questions here will usually get some replies, as well.

Well I'll probably go back to my old panel - I'll give this another today but then i need to get some work done.

I'm only asking questions about things I've not seen answers to after looking at the documentation and searching for answer. I understand they want people to buy the product and I'm happy to do that but these issues put me off. I don't have time to spend 12 months finding out out to "fix" things because they don't work properly first time. It's not as if I'm trying to do anything special here and when I've been searching for answers I see time and again the same questions from years ago this doesn't encourage me to buy it over other solutions that I know would give me less hassle and have far better support if I do hit a issue.

Thanks to those who have responded, I'll checkout those resources Joe and with luck everything will turn out great.

We're sorry to see you go. I don't think I understand what problems you were having, specifically. We're always trying to make things easier to use, so if you have specific feedback about what you found confusing, we'd love to hear it.

Thanks for giving Virtualmin a try.

It would be interesting to me to know what version of VM you were testing and what other panel you were or are using. I have installed VM GPL and VM Pro repeatedly and find it mostly brain-dead easy. The GPL comes with phpmyadmin, the Pro with phpmyadmin and Wordpress as install scripts, leaving only varnish as a user install.
