Forum change: Only admins can make new topics in News forum

Howdy all,

In the ongoing effort to reduce spam that finds its way out via email, I have setup more advanced access control in our forums (using the forum_access module, plus a patch to add comment support, if you're interested in the technical details). Creating new topics in this forum (News) is now limited to just administrators (me, Eric, Ilia, Jamie, and a couple of documentation administrators). Because News has the most people subscribed to email notifications, it is also the most damaging when spam comes into this forum. And, because it is the first in the list of forums, it also is often the first hit by spammers.

So, if you've unsubscribed from notifications because of spam, you can safely re-subscribe to News and know that you (hopefully) won't receive any spam via that path. Comments are still permitted, so discussion of News items is possible. Though, as always, we try to keep it pretty low traffic and focused on the specific news item. (We also have the virtualmin-announce mailing list here that also only allows admin posting, and is even lower traffic than the News forum...I only announce software updates and security notices there.)

All of the other forums allow posting by anyone (but spam will get you banned immediately, so don't spam, though you can occasionally announce your Virtualmin and Cloudmin related services and products in the Third Party News forum).

Cheers,

Joe
