Server OS change RHEL 7 -> Ubuntu LTS 16.04.2

Hi

for the moment I'm using RHEL 7 but I need to change my server. So as I use my server only in a private way I also want to switch the OS to Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS

My Red Hat System for the moment has the following application versions: Apache 2.4.6 PHP 5.6.30 Logrotate 3.8.6 MySQL 5.6.36 ProFTP 1.35 Perl 5.016003

Is that possible to do with a simple backup/restore within virtualmin or not? Or are their any known issues doing so?

Many thanks in advance

Hi, If I am you I would switch to centos - you would be very familiar with centos and rhell however on ubuntu be a bit careful - php7.. if you would like to make switch anyway I would suggest you to install virtualmin glp and ubuntu onto your virtualbox or virtual environment and move sites between real server and virtualbox and once confirmed that everything works as it should - I would switch servers in life.. I hope so it helps somehow.

Thanks. I totaly forgot Centos, I think that would be a better solution, you're right I see they are at version 7 - 1611 Are there actual PHP/MySQL versions so that there is no issue while transferring the sites? Is the OS fully supported by Virtualmin as I remember some years ago there were issues with newer OS versions. Many thanks already

Frank

@datateam

im on debian it self - sorry but im not on centos it self and I have no resources to test this... if you have one - just do it :)

Thanks for contacting us datateam!

Unborn (a hard working community member) has given you a few tips already, but we wanted to give you a few additional details.

Virtualmin has what we call Grade A support for CentOS 6 and 7, Ubuntu 16.04 and 14.04, and Debian 6/7/8.

I personally like Ubuntu. Joe and Jamie like CentOS. And as you see above Unborn likes Debian :-)

It should work great on any of those -- I'd simply suggest using the one that you're most familiar with.

As far as migrating from one to another -- no problem! You can use this link here for instructions on how to perform a migration:

Feel free to let us know if you have any additional questions.
