snapshots

hello,

I playing around the snapshot functions and after 2 tries.. i started to see this error... on the host.. i can confirm that i am able to create a snapshot on other guests on this same machine.. but this one fails with the below error?

anyway we could get this resolved? will a restart of the host fix this ?

Creating snapshot of system server2.interstellarconsulting.com .. .. failed : /dev/vg0/email.cloudmin.interstellarconsulting.com_0_1_snap: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 137438887936: Input/output error /dev/vg0/email.cloudmin.interstellarconsulting.com_0_1_snap: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 137438945280: Input/output error /dev/vg0/email.cloudmin.interstellarconsulting.com_0_1_snap: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 0: Input/output error /dev/vg0/email.cloudmin.interstellarconsulting.com_0_1_snap: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 4096: Input/output error Snapshots of an origin that has a merging snapshot is not supported

...moved to separate thread.

Those seem like unrelated problems, so let's focus on the first one.

Is the VM that you're trying to snapshot itself a previous clone of another VM?

hello, no i havent created any clones ..

now thinking back, this particular email.cloudmin.interstellarconsulting.com_0_1_snap VM was made from a image which i got it from the provider and then imported the image and then boot off it.. i might have cloned it to be safe... but i am not 100% sure.. nevertheless, the snapshot worked fine once or twice.. and then it broke down when i tried it recently..

Unfortunately, LVM doesn't allow creation of a snapshot of a snapshot, and Cloudmin clones VMs using snapshotting. The only work-around is to create an image of the VM, then delete and re-create it from that image.

ok i shall try do this, and hopefully this problem goes away once for all.. i will update this thread back once i have done this..

question though, do i have to worry the swap partition when i create the new guest from this so called image file?

Ok so i did as you suggested, created the image and reinstalled .. and both snapshot and resizing of the disks on the guest are working fine..

Great! Unfortunately, the inability to resize or snapshot snapshots is a limitation of Linux LVM.

The next release of Cloudmin will detect this situation and show a more useful error message earlier in the process.
