Probably because the domain name resolves to the external IP. Which is then forwarded via your router to the virtualmin server, and virtualmin then looks at the domain name and decides which domain to send you to. But accessing internally it would be looking for the lan IP and not the wan IP and the lan IP is not associated with a domain name. Might be able to fix that by manually adding an A record to the domain for the lan IP.

You need to use a BIND feature called "views". Basically, it makes it so that you have two different zone files for each domain; one for internal, the other for external. Fortunately, some kind soul has written some documentation at https://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/BIND_DNS_Server#Using_BIND_views. Let us know how you get on.
