Apply network configuration and get offline

Hello, On a fresh Debian 4 install on an AMD64 server with RAID 1 (two disks), ReiserFS partitions, i used the install.sh script from the online shop. At the end, everything was fine (amazing and easy). But when i changed the search domain and click on the apply button in the "Network Configuration" tab of Webmin, the server went down (webmin, ssh, ping, ...). The hosting support checked the OS and report that the gateway was not set and there were some little errors in BIND conf (no more details). They fix those problems. I resume my work and i check again the virtualmin conf. An error was reported and it was suggested to add 127.0.0.1 in the DNS servers. So i did and again i applied the new configuration. At this moment, the server went offline again. This time, hosting support did a soft reboot at the console and the server went online. What can i do to avoid a soft reboot each time i change the network conf with Webmin ? Thank by advance.

Kinds regards

There's two things going on here.

First up, you don't need to "apply" the configuration when you just change the DNS Client configuration. Applying restarts the network interfaces--but that isn't required for DNS client changes.

Second, it sounds like the network configuration in the standard network configuration files is broken in some way--applying the network configuration should only make it go offline for a second or two while the interfaces restart. The fact that the box becomes inaccessible means that the configuration is wrong. I'm surprised that just a reboot fixes it--seems like your provider would have to do something manually to bring the interface up if the configuration stored on disk is wrong (which is what you're describing).

So, don't click Apply Changes in your network configuration, unless you know that the configuration that you're applying is correct.

Thank you for your help. I will check more deeply the network conf.
