huge memory footprint of spamclear.pl

I happened to be logged in to the server last night while spamclear.pl was running and noticed that it was consuming a whopping 187M of RAM. For a VPS environment that is huge burden and it was adversely affecting the web and other services running on the machine at the time.

So is that huge size normal? Can something be done about it?
