Virtualmin vs. DirectAdmin vs. ISPmanager

Virtualmin vs. DirectAdmin vs. ISPmanager -- your opinions please

Hello forum members,

please tell me your opinions about the advantages and disadvantages of Virtualmin over DirectAdmin or ISPmanager.

We have some dedicated servers but only for our own projects. We have about 50 to 100 domains (sites) on the servers. We don't need reseller accounts.

But we need a fast, flexible, reliable AND affordable system with good support and community.

Thank you in advance.

PS: Yes, I know, there is a Virtualmin GPL for free but unfortunately it lacks some features we need. And Virtualmin Pro unfortunately is very expensive.

Personally I disagree with VM Pro being very expensive. Take into account the renewal price for the years to come and what you pay for support at some other panels ;)

see my other replies for opinions

My experience with VM/Webmin
i run centos 5.2
ran the install.sh
went perfect and installed everything I needed
worked out of the box.
support is quick and professional
community is responsive and alive
it is intuitive (as I knew little when I started over a year ago)
as with any software there might be some issues, but it's resolved swiftly although issues I had were created by me and not the software.

Now i have 3 servers and 2 of them have GPL version as they are backup and slave nameserver controllable from one panel

Thanks, I'll do a search in the forums.

<div class='quote'>And...I will humbly point out that neither of the other products you've been raving about support those features any more than Virtualmin GPL</div>

Yes, you are absolutely right.

<div class='quote'>--nobody else offers this feature at all.</div>

That's not true. I already had installed both and they are offering this feature but they don't call it &quot;Server Templates&quot;. They just have menue items to select PHP modes per domain.

There are some free open source scripts like ISPConfig which offers to select PHP modes per domain too.

Anyway, you are right. No other product offers that much features and flexibility like Virtualmin.

What does Virtualmin GPL lack that you need? There may be workarounds.

Virtualmin Professional primarily targets users who make money with Virtualmin--so, the features that are specific to Virtualmin Professional are those that help you make money with your system. Conversely, those features that just make life a lot easier for the average hobbyist or web developer are almost entirely present in Virtualmin GPL.

We've already established you don't need reseller accounts...so that's one Pro-only feature you don't need. What else is missing from GPL?

I have played around a little bit with ISPconfig GPL version. What I like about it, it had an invoicing system built-in. What I didn't like may sound picky but you don't have the ability to change the MySQL database for the virtual websites that get created. It uses its own weird (not easy to remember)naming convention. There was talk in the forums that this will be addressed soon.

With Virtualmin GPL, I have not had much luck installing it using the automated install script even on a minimal Debian base install. It fails with the error &quot;failed installing virtualmin-base&quot; I'm sure it is probably something I did. But I am able to install it just fine doing the manual way. It is very easy to manage virtual websites as well as managing the server using webmin! It is my preferred CPANEL.

This may sound strange, I actually have the Virtualmin PRO subscription but I prefer to use the GPL version. Just because I have my Debian server setup a certain.
