I noticed that recent installations of joomla have set the site url (without www) in the $live_site parameter in configuration.php. This created many problems, especially with logging in when using the url with www. in the browser, it would not work. The solution is to leave the $live_site variable empty, this way it works fine with both www.domain.tld and domain.tld
