E-Mail Account mail server address

I'm trying to set up my mail server, but I can't see what the mail server address is, for connecting from an external mail client

The server is asrservice.com, and I tried pop3.asrservice.com, and smtp.asrservice.com, but that didn't work, or I have it set up wrong.

How do I find the pop3 and smtp addresses?

Howdy -- you can use any name that resolves to your server's IP address.

For example, you can put in just "asrservice.com" for the incoming and outgoing mail server.

If you've setup your server to act as a nameserver for your domains, then you could go into Server Configuration -> DNS Records to see what DNS records you could use in order to connect your email client to your server.

OK I have done all that, but still can't get it to receive mail on that account, it looks like it sends it, but I'm not receiving anything.

I attached a screen shot of my DNS Records.

I set my Mail client to use asrservice.com for both POP, and SMTP.

You may want to verify that email being sent to your server arrives, and is delivered correctly.

What you may want to do is send yourself an email from an external server (such as Gmail), then review your mail logs in /var/log/maillog to see if any signs of that email show up, or to determine if you're getting any errors.

If you see it delivered, you may want to try logging into Usermin on port 20000 to see if you're able to view the email there.

I have tried that all day log. the problem is I don't understand how the mail server works, and the mail log is a foreign language to me, I don't understand it at all. I have read the Documentation over and over again, but it doesn't help.

I have only been working on this mail server sense I leased Virtualmin (about a year ago now), and I'm no closer to getting it running, than I was when I started. I'm ready to just dump the mail server all together. And the DNS Server right along with it. I was able to get all the websites to come up, even got the SSL to work on the one site I bought the Certificate for. but that's as far as I have been able to go. I know Linux about as well as Obama knows how to run a Country. Its a lost cause.

So unless someone can Log in to my server and get it going for me, I just may go back to having someone else Host my sites, and just shut down the Server altogether.

Regards

Michael

I can certainly log in and take a look.

Can you try one thing before we do that? Try logging into Usermin, just to see if those emails are there.

That will show whether it's an issue with the email client, or an issue with the email not arriving at your server.

Logging into Usermin should be straight forward -- just browse here:

https://asrservice.com:20000

And log in as your email username.

If you see your email there, that means we need to tweak Outlook.

If you don't see your email, that means we need to tweak something on your server.

OK I have at least been able to get the asrservice.com to send out messages (SMTP) is working. I have another external account for email through roadrunner.com. Originally the mike@asrservice.com was handled by an outside mail server. I have canceled that account, so I could see if I could get the mail through this server. So if I send an email from mike@asrservice (this server) to my roadrunner.com account with an attachment, it is sent, and I receive it at my roadrunner account. When I send an email from my roadrunner account it shows that it was sent, but ti doesn't show up on my mail server. It doesn't mater if I check from my Windows Live Mail, or log in to usermin, there is nothing there.

I haven't tried any of the other sites on the server. I have gone through everything I can think of in setting up the email server, and check DNS settings to make sure I was using the right server address, and I must be at least for the SMTP server. I know it has to be something simple that I'm missing, just don't know what it is. Ant to be honest about it I'm still not sure if I have the DNS server set up right.

I figure if I get this one working, then I can go through the other sites and set it up the same way.

So if you want to log in and have a look that would be great, I really need to get this out of the way, so I can go back to making sites. I'm on my Windows system at the moment, so as soon as I send this I will go to the server, send the last bit of the "maillog"

Regards

Michael

Here is the part of the log that encludes the outgoing mail for both asrservice.com 2 roadrunner.com, and from roadrunner.com 2 asrservice.

Okay, I see a few problems:

  1. Your server wasn't listed as a DNS server in /etc/resolv.conf. The IP "127.0.0.1" should be listed in there.

  2. Your server's hostname wasn't an FQDN... that can cause problems, especially when the server's hostname has the same as a Virtual Server on your system.

  3. It looks like a "myorigin" line was setup in /etc/postfix/main.cf, which can cause problems.

  4. Your server's hostname wasn't listed in the mydestination line of /etc/postfix/main.cf.

I fixed each of the above. I changed your server's hostname to server1.asrservice.com. You may want to go into Server Configuration -> DNS Records for asrservice.com, and add a DNS 'A' record for server1.asrservice.com that points to your server.

Also, note that your system was failing the Config Check, which can often detect issues such as the above. If you find things not working for you, you may want to go into System Settings -> Re-Check Config, and have it do a config check.

I was able to send a test message to your account, so things appear to be working now!

OK I added the DNS 'A' record for server1.asrservice.com . and it looks like my mail server is now working. , and can now receive my mail from my asrservice.com account. This is great. Thank you, I have lost a lot of hair over this mail server.

Did you happen to look at the DNS server to see if its setup alright?

I guess I will have to keep my server up and running now. The mail server was the main thing I was pulling out my hair on.

I have another problem I want to ask you about, but I will start a new thread for it.

Regards Michael

If the Re-Check Config is working, and your email/web server is working, your DNS should be in good shape.

If you ever run into DNS troubles, run that Re-Check Config... if you see errors/warnings, feel free to open up a support request here and we can go over what's going on.

Anyhow, I'm glad your email is working now!

I have another problem I want to ask you about, but I will start a new thread for it.

Yup, if you have any other questions, feel free to open up a new support request!
