Can't send mail (or receive it)

Hey again Joe,

Can't send or receive mail. When mail is sent, it sits in the Sendmail Queue with status: "Deferred: 451 Temporary local problem - please try later"

Where to from here?

Hey Jeremy,

Hmmm...I'm not real sure. I don't actually speak sendmail very well. Any particular reason for switching off of Postfix (which is what gets setup by default by Virtualmin Professional)?

I would guess that you don't have a virtual map setup in Sendmail, so it doesn't know that it's supposed to accept mail for your domains (and if your DNS MX record is pointing to your server, it would try sending it to itself...but then can't do anything with it).

Ok - you've opened my eyes to a few things here...but still probs.

My php scripts use Sendmail when emailing stuff.

When I go into Webmin -> Servers -> Postfix Configuration I get the following error:

"Error while checking current Postfix configuration. Please manually fix Postfix configuration.

postfix: fatal: config variable inet_interfaces: host not found: localhost"

Also, when I log into Usermin and send mail, it is being sent from account@serverhost.com instead of whoever@account.com

Ok I got WM to display the Postfix Configuration by editing the config file to inet_interfaces = all (now that I'm in to the config section I can answer a few of previous questions)...

But Postfix won't start! I'm using the default Virtualmin installation.

sorry for so many posts - be good if i could edit my post!

here's maillog output when trying to start:

Mar 1 19:04:11 web1 postfix/postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system
Mar 1 19:04:11 web1 postfix/master[[14793]]: fatal: bind 0.0.0.0 port 25: Address already in use

What could already be using port 25?

Hey Jeremy,

What OS is this? Something appears to have gone wrong during the final configuration step on your system, leading to none of the mail stuff being setup right.

It's probably Sendmail on 25, since you're getting sendmail deferral information in the first post. Again, if you didn't switch off of Postfix on purpose, then something went wrong...and the easiest solution is to get the install post-configuration step running to completion.

You can try it yourself, or you can send over address and auth details, and I can fix this for you.

To run it yourself, remove and then reinstall the virtualmin-base package. I dunno what OS, so I can't be sure which commands to use, but on Fedora or CentOS or Red Hat:

rpm -e virtualmin-base
yum install virtualmin-base

Watch closely for errors. In particular, you expect to see a series of configuration steps that ends with firewall rules being setup "Allowing TCP traffic on port ..." and so on. If any of those steps fails, we'll need to know what error you get.

Hi Joe,

I'm using FC6. I removed and reinstalled virtualmin-base as you said. There were no errors in the installation.

There must have been something wrong with initial install as now I have many more options available when creating a server (DAV logins, Mailman, AWstats reporting - none of these were here before). The same problem has happened on my dev server running exact same OS.

Postfix is now running and Sendmail is not. When I log into Usermin however, there is no mail in anyone's mail files (there was internal mail) and I get the error: 'An error occurred listing mail in this folder : Failed to lookup IP address for localhost'

Here's error log...
