[SOLVED]Is turning ClamAV off safe?

Hello, My question is regarding ClamAV. Our virtual server hosts a couple of Wordpress websites which do not allow the users to upload files, the FTP is turned off and at this point we do not plan on setting a mail server there. There is an email alias for each website, set to forward the messages to one of our main emails, hosted elsewhere. Lately the server has been acting up and it definitely looked like resource usage spikes were the culprit. I've added a 512 swap to the VPS (it's a 1 core, 2gb RAM, 10gb SSD) and turned off ClamAV from starting on boot and now the RAM usage on idle is halved. Considering our current and intended usage, is it ok to cleave ClamAV turned off? Thanks in advance

Howdy,

ClamAV just checks incoming email for known viruses.

However, it's perhaps not the best anti-virus out there. If the users receiving emails have other sorts of anti-virus running on their desktops, or some sort of anti-virus is running on the alternate mail server you mentioned, that should certainly handle any incoming virus threats as good as or better than ClamAV would.

Thank you - the VPS has been running with the ClamAV stopped for several days now and it seems the crashes have stopped. Marking the topic as solved.
