Please help! - Can't authenticate when using SMTP

I can't send email using my server as the SMTP server. I set up name based domains and authenticate using a user/password that is added to one of these virtual domains but it doesn't work.

It does work when I use the primary user/password for the domain.

e.g. for domainxyz.com

user domainxyz@domainxyz.com pass xxxxx

This works

but a user I added: user joe@domainxyz.com pass xxxxx

does not authenticate and I cannot send email

There are no typos and I can CHECK the account(s) using POP3 no problem.
